Ports for alpine type x
tuned to 32 hz approx...it's never exact, and can vary a few hz on either side, but it's a good range as it's plenty loud on the low stuff (under 40hz) and delivers great upper bass in the 50-70 hz region as well. I suggest you use a subsonic filter at 25hz to prevent over excursion of the woofer (not a hell of a lot down there anyway unless you like to listen to canon shots and pipe organs a lot). Anyway, it's easy to try and if you don't like it, you can seal the port and use the enclosure sealed.
I finally used a 4" round port of 16" long so that I can cut it if it's too low. I didn't find polyfill locally but put a bag of this: Isolant en fibre de verre Micro-Pak JOHNS MANVILLE - Rona.ca.
Is it the same as polyfill? With this thing I got a lot of fibres going through my port and it went all over my trunk!

That's fibre glass, which works as a sound deadner, but you don't want to breath or get that stuff on you, which makes it not good for ported boxes (sealed is fine). Any fabric store or wal mart will have polyfill (pillow stuffing). If you keep the fibre glass, then you need to put grill cloth or some other fabric cover on the port mouth inside the box to prevent the fibres from being blown out (it will cause some port restriction though).
Man I also had that exact problem too. It depends hows much bass you looking for tell me this. When you drive down the street do people look at you? Is your sub a 10 or 12? Sure ported will give you louder bass but it will be alittle off. Personally I like sealed better for my type r it sounds amazing and its enough bass to be heard down the street!
Just stay with sealed man!
But if your serious about buying another box you could go with ported or even bandpass..

^^it'll only be "off" if you don't do it properly. Tell me this, how many high end speaker systems for the home or professional use are sealed? Almost none! I actually like both sealed and vented systems, but the efficiency of ported makes it the best option if you have the space.
