Sound quality Sub Box

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post on here. Im in the mist of creating a sound system for my 2006 mazda 6 sport wagon and have a few questions or ideas and would like some feeback.

Just a background on myself, I've done car audio back in the late 90's and early 2000's. I went to mobile dynamics in 98 and learned alot. worked for a few years here in montreal in oem, then moved on to installs and had fun but realized that unless i owned a shop I was not going to put food on the table with my desire for car audio. and also most people want a starter and a deck and 4, not some fiberglass hidden in the wheel well. lol.

ok so here goes, with the kids around, i cant blast my psb subs and jbl towers in the house anymore so I want to set up a good clean sound in my car. Do i want bass when i decide im in the mood for some old school hip hop? yes. Do i want to listen to some am radio once in a while yes. But do i want to have some tight punch when i crank some blues rock, for sure. Right now I'm listening to alot of southern blues and I love the mix of instruments used. Just saw the jimi hendrix experience and i got a yearning for some real sound.

so this is what i have and what I want to do.

I have one infinity ref 1250 sub, a second is at my disposal for a miniscule $ amount.
an eclipse xa1000d for it(this is why i think a second sub is ok)
and pair of infinity 6*8 coax for rear doors
and a reference 6810cs components for fronts.

for the moment i want to start with this, im keeping stock deck. except when i used eclipse decks, ive never been one to really go big on decks. something for others to see and steal and I've always believed that a good xover and eq can overcome any shortcomings this setup may have...
so what id like to know is this...for the sub box...im going sealed, but...im either building a tube with a rubber coating inside and fiberglass exterior that can be painted to match car, and if i go with two subs id like to put one inside and another on the front of this tube..i dont remeber the name but from what i remember in school (ill look at the books tonight) this allows me to have the space requirements of one sub with the output of two (+3db) and gives very good sound quality.

also as a side note, i may compete in the future but for now this is for me...if i compete, ill add a four channel from front and rear speakers. a center channel pod in the hidden dash compartment and a very good eq something like the dql8 by audiocontrol. just wish the eq wasnt 500$. but overall i think with less than a grand and some good work sealing the doors (ducktape is a trick my teacher at mobile dynamics taught me) and i should be to have a good listent to the eagles hotel california live, close my eyes (while not driving) and feel where each musician is....

your thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks
kevin from laval

IMO the first thing you should consider is a 4-channel amp

well im going to look for one on ebay or kijiji, but want something decent, should have xover on it, until i buy a real eq/xover.

was looking at something from soundstream, used to install them at m&m autotel back in the day. i learned alot from him, how most places in our area just made the outside nice while we strived to even make the hidden stuff nice.

any other good examples? on a budget so not going after xtant or any class a amps..thanks

would you rather a pioneer premier gmx404 (abit old) or mtx tc4004. right now imthinking the mtx, but ill continue looking...im not in a rush for the main amp as i would only compete next summer, after ive had time to build a real sub box and not just use a bassworks that comes with the 2nd 1250w i just bought. for now it will do, but i wont go anywhere to show that off...plus its ported, not using that for sq.

just found this.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/Infinity-475A-Car-Amplifier-4-channel-4-2-Ohm-300watts-/120649945155?pt=Car_Amplifiers&hash=item1c174c1043

with the full range preamp out, i can hook an epicenter or a gain control to the eclispe sub amp and then be able to lower the subs during sq.

then all i have to do is get a really good eq if i decide to compete...

what yall think?

I found a few eclispe amps for 2 ch, the ea2000 or the xa2000. Not sure if the xa2000 is a bit too much power for the 2ohm infinities...but will try to get either one of these or the infinity 4 channel. Shoudl give me some good front power...

The TC4004 is a good backup plan. It's a decent amp.

IMO you shouldn't sell a vented box so short but if you like sealed, so be it. The woofer arrangement you are talking about sounds like am isobaric setup. It allows you to use half the box volume with the same response and output of a single woofer in the proper size enclosure.

You don't need to amp your rear speakers or even to put them, but thats an opinion.
If I were you, I would find a 2 channel amp that can handle 2 ohms and that gives around 80-100 watts rms per channel (the ea2000 doesn't handle 2 ohm) for the front comps and build a custom box for the sub you already have

HI all, just picked up the other 1250w and box, its a sealed box not vented, looks decent, 3/4 mdf with black felt covering. nothing fancy but will do until i can build a custom encloser to house all the equipment. But that is not the best part, he had a Blaupunkt pca260 that he offered me for 20$, lol. it goes to 80w rms at 2ohms. perfect, even has an line out to go from that amp to my eclipse sub amp.

Just looking for a gain/bass control ala epicenter, although to be honest not sure if i want to spend $150 on one like the audiocontrol costs. well see what i can find, i also dont want to induce any noise into the system by adding a cheap gain control.

so now i will have
front - infinity reference 6810cs component powered by blaupunkt pca260
rear - infinity reference6832cf powered by deck
sub - 2x infinity reference 1250w powered by eclipse xa1000 class d amp.

no eq'ng yet, but that will come with time, not bad for around 250$.
i know its not like the 4 pioneer aluminums i had back in 98 powered by a mtx 2300 mono. all in a fiberglass box, made that at mobile dynamics...
i also know its not up to what most you guys have but its a start and should sound like the mid level speakers they are...
