Thumbs up Think your box doesn't make a difference?

OK so I have had 2 Kenwood KFC-W2505 10" subs running off a RF Punch P3001 amp for the past 3 years. Subs are 150W rms each and birth sheet for amp says it is 383 @ 2ohms. So when I got these I bought a crappy cheap bandpass box that came with 2 subs in it already. Took those out and put the Kenwoods in. Sounded alright but not great. So after joining this forum and reading how much importance is put on having the right box for your subs I decided to take the plunge and build my own box. So I designed a dual chamber 1cu' sealed box 3/4" mdf with double front baffle and recessed mounted subs. So 2 weeks ago took the Kenwoods out of the bandpass box to get them ready to go in the new one. Wanted to still have some bass so figured what the hell put the original 10's back in and use them until the enw box is ready. To tell you the truth could not hear a big difference between them. So now I have the same subs and amp running in a sealed box made to specks and I CANNOT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE. I swear I have new subs and amp as they do not sound the same anymore. I was afraid with a sealed box I would miss the low end I got with the bandpass but so far I am LOVING THIS BOX. If you think it won't make a difference trust me it is night and day over what I had.

My box was built to spec. Adding acoustic felt in it made a day and night difference. It's a sealed box btw.

you'd prolly crap yourself if you made it 3 cubes ported. had the same subs with a ol' skool fozg8 250@2. jammed pretty good for what it was, did a 138.3 on a audiocontrol.

Theoretically, a sealed box will dig as deep as any bass u throw at it.

If you dampen the walls with felt, it will hit deeper and smoother. If you leave the walls bare, it will be punchier and sounds not as deep. This applies to sealed box, tested with witness totally day and night difference.

~ glennersss - Yeah hopefully you will hear a big difference. I never put much weight into the mantra I heard about how much difference the box makes. But I am sooo a believer now. LOL

~ danyman - Yeah pics are coming, picking up a camera this weekend and pics should be up next Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately no build pics, but pics of everything installed.

~ turboeeyore - Yeah that will be my next project. Do not have a garage right now so either in the spring or before if I find a house with a garage then we are going to do a ported box for them. Always thought they were decent subs for what I paid. $40 for the pair off Ebay. But wow do they ever sound better now. Can't wait to hear them in a ported box now.

~ ancientpimp - I have not really noticed any of the low end missing now that they are in a ported box. I think it could be that the bandpass they were in was so bad I wasn't getting the low lows anyway so I can't miss what I never had. Will be doing ported soon and will see then.

So now comes time to set the gains and get it sounding real good. Just added a Memphis 4ch on the components in the doors too so I am enjoying sonic bliss but it is not perfect yet. Anyone around Brampton / Mississauga want to get together this Sat and help a guy out with some tuning? I will come to you and supply beverages etc.

Nick

really anything would be better than a prefab bandpass box.

Yep. If I had of known that 4 years ago I wouldn't be stuck with the giant bass-pass that is currently in my living room... I just borrowed a friends 12" TypeR in a sealed box, just to try out for a few days. My initial impression was that it was "less bass-y". But that was before I tuned things a little for the new sub. Its still not perfect as I haven't touched the cross-overs on the amp, but this is the first time I've been able to feel the bass hit. And its nice!

I'm going to see if I can get someone to build me a ported box for my 10" Type S. Should get somewhere between the tightness of the sealed, and the depth of the band-bass, I hope. Alpine is great for listing recommended enclosures, I'll have to check them out.

Now that I think about it, not all of the improvement could be due to the sealed box. I've gone from a 10" to a 12", stepped up to a better model, and his sub is wired for 2ohms, instead of mine at 4. So the amp is putting out another 210W to the Type R.
