Is this for 1 8" or 2?

One, that's why I didn't take it too far. The enclosure ended up big. Even after folding it the length will be about 36". Add the half for the other driver and you've got a huge box. Figure 36Lx26Wx15H or some other ratio that gets the correct line dimensions.

WOW... ok... that may be bigger than I can do

This is why most people who know how to properly design TL enclosures don't use them in car audio. I can fit my 3 12's ported in a smaller footprint than a single 12 in a TL.

As the graph shows though... you get huge gains in the lower frequencies. They are great for home theater. I use an old-school 15W3. I've played with putting it into TL's but the boxes took up HUGE amounts of space. It's the first thing I'm going to play with when I get Martin Kings sheets.

Thanks again for all the VERY USEFUL info Kev.

Mr. Kevin

What about

1/4 wave length of the Fs and a Sd area tube? Filled with something to slow down the air velocity...

Hehehe... see, knowing that about the HT stuff makes me maybe want to give it a try for my setup at home.

Right now I have a Klipsch setup with a single downfiring 8"... it's nice but more is always better.

Either way... thanks for the help guys, this has been an eye opening experience!!

No problem. For tube length I used 100 inches which is close to the correct 1/4wavelength after you consider the stuffing density. The impedance plots confirmed this. I ended up using moderate amount of stuffing because using lots was hurting the efficiency too much. With a Cauer Elliptical filter this could be usefull, but I still like the wider gain bandwidth of the tapered line.

I use the amp from an old Polk Audio powered sub on my JL. Gives me almost 300 rms, and full xover controls. You could in theory do the same.... Pull the amp (and sub if you want) and put them into a TL enclosure. Looks 100% factory. Sounds 1000x better. You will find that different speakers yield way different response curves too.

Good luck man. I'll be sure to post my next HT TL.

That is very nice.

I was only asking what you think of the 1/4 lambda of the Fs and Sd area way of making TL, that is the only way I know and I never knew of any TL software, that is amazing.

Oh sorry I missed that . I like the 1/4 lambda tuning because it controls driver excursion at resonance and therefore distortion. As far as Sd area goes I find larger cross sections better for these longer lines. I also prefer offset driver to control ripple and if I'm using the line for a wideband application I almost always use a mass loaded type (ported). It controls the ripple better for a smooth response and easy transition to the midrange. Have you built many transmission lines?
