Tuning bandpass boxes, any experts?
I have a bandpass box and the bandwidth is too narrow. It slams good on really deep bass, but on higher bass, nothing... I have a track with a wicked sliding sub bass and it does not sound right with this box, the first half of the note is nonexistant.
I've done some searching and learned that decreasing volume in the ported chamber will increase bandwidth and raise the resonant frequency. That sounds like what I'm looking for. I'm wondering how much volume I'll have to displace to make a difference, and also what I could use? I was thinking of gluing some 4x4's in there with construction adhesive, but maybe someone has a better idea and might know how much volume I'll have to fill to hear a difference.

Well I tinkered with it and came to the conclusion that bandpass is good if you want loud, boomy, muddy sound with no fidelity. Not my goal, I am looking for some fidelity and listening pleasure.
So I took the glass window out, stuffed the chambers with poly fill, plugged the ports and tweaked the x-overs and gain. I basically turned it into a sealed box. It sounds pretty damn good now! It's not quite as loud or deep, but it's more accurate and punchy.

A ported enclosure might give you the right mix of tonality, output, and low-end extension you're looking for. However you'll have to start from scratch...the bandpass enclosure cannot be modified into a ported enclosure; the tuning would be way too high.
