Want to build my first box. Need design help.

Hey guys,

Fairly new to the whole car audio scene, but it is because I am still young.

I am putting a sound system in my brothers car and I decided I would like to build my first box to expand my skills so I can build boxes for myself down the road.

First thing is the subwoofer that's going in the box will be a RE Audio SRX 15" 300w RMS/600w peak sub. It has dual 4 ohm voice coils.

It will be powered by a Orion 400w RMS / 800w Peak amplifier and I will be wiring the RE SRX 15" to 2ohm.

I know the RE speakers are pretty good and can take a little more rated power. Do you think I will be safe running 400w RMS through it, with a good enclosure?

Where do I start for a design? How can I turn the recommended 2.5-3 cubes ported @ 34-35hz into a design plan that will tell me what size of wood to cut. Also, I was wondering how the whole tuning process happened.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks alot.

Edit: Was wondering if anybody does make up enclosure plans, and would be willing to design some for me and I will throw some money your way.

You can get others opinions if you want, but I will design you a box for free! In my other RE SRx I am running it at 600 rms, @ 3cu ft 32 hz in a custom box I made. Well talk about dimensions etc you need, and what you are expecting from it. Just email me or when you call and well figure it out.

Tuning frequency depends on internal displacement, and port length. Area of port comes into effect for noise also, and has to be considered. The RE sub box calculator is used alot (at least from the sites I frequent, and I used it).

Great work, and thanks for the updated string. Are you planning to use any light insulation in the cabinet? Or use any bracing?(a box is a box, this is a cabinet)

Don't really have any plans for insulation or bracing.

Would either be necessary? What would the advantages of putting insulation in be?

Would bracing be necessary there is only 400 watts going through the sub? I mean the 3/4 mdf is quite strong already.

A light layer(in the case of ported enclosures) of insulation (dakron, fiberfill) will help keep the cabinet from sounding boomy, bracing will help eliminate cabinet resonance. If you use a stamped steel woofer(as opposed to cast), bracing the back of the magnet(being careful not to block the rear vent) to the back wall of the cabinet using a 2x2 will help make the woofer sound more punchy, by preventing the basket from "ringing".
The 3/4 MDF should suffice, but I'd still brace.

This system is just for my brothers car, and seeing as this is my first box I don't think he or I need anything fancy.

If I am not satisfied with the sound I will consider using bracing and insulation. On my next box for myself I will certainly brace it.

Here are some more pictures.

There shouldn't be any need to brace the enclosure with the amount of power he's using.
