Wtf is a Sonotube?

Where does the port go? I know it's a long tube, but is there an opening at the end and it acts as a box & port? Is it simply a huge aeroport? :dunno:

Advantages/disadvantages?

It's basically a tuneable port. They can be found in different diameters and cut to any length for tuning. I've seen some guys have the flared(aeroport) ends machined or use beefed up aluminum flares from HVAC systems.

I have seen cylindrical enclosures(eg. Bazooka) as well and have heard they are an efficient shape. I actually have an old MDF bazooka style tube that I want to fit with a beefier sub, that matches enclosure volume and do an external port.

Sonotube is the brand. They're used in construction to create concrete cylinders. People just use them as ports. Similar to using wood for boxes instead of framing for houses etc.

Have you ever seen a build like this? That's 10 11" diameter subs and 424.43" of port area, way too much port area but you get the idea. It'd probably even out a bit better with like 8-12 12's. That's 3 different sizes of sonotube and the outside diameter is 47" - the interior height of a Chevy Astro. Save weight, less flex, better resonance, better air flow? Expensive?

Edit: Imagine being able to fit a couch inside that port... for HT. That'd be nuts.

Interesting concept but I've never seen or heard of sonotube that big. Could still build it though using wood or fibreglass.

Lord Huggington 06-11-2011 04:35 PM

How big does this one look?

"We are a local distributor of SONOTUBEŽ, with a large inventory. of sizes ranging from 6 inches to 48 inches in diameter."

The MDF to cut all those holes out of would be a waste of money. Talk to DB Don about his blazer. He has a very similar style. 4 woofers in a wall with the center cut out.

Lord Huggington 06-12-2011 01:33 PM

With 48" sono you could do 8 12's in 2.5-3 NET each or 6 15's in 3-3.5 NET each, anymore and it'd probably be over a musical tune.

Why would it be a waste of money? Two 4x8 sheets would cover the front and the back 1.5" ($120), and you'd have some left over from the port being cut out.

So then do it. What are you waiting for? You seem to have it all planned so go for it.
