10" spare tire enclosure advice
Hey guys, first post asking for advice.
I have been without a stereo for almost a year... so I am slowly forming plans for something new but I don't want it to get stolen again so I want to do a set up similar to JL's stealth box but I am not looking to pay there cost. I am currently considering these 2 subs 10" Alpine Type R 10 JLw3v3 My last setup I ran a JL (12w3v2) but I hear they are overpriced for what you get. So I am wondering which you guys would chose and what other recommendations you might have. The box will be sealed and I will be using pdx-5 for power (hopefully). I'm going to be looking on ebay/watching boxing day sales and would like to spend about 200 max before tax on the sub. Thanks |
How are the JL overpriced? how much are you finding the JLs for?
|
Sorry what I meant was, some people dislike JL and think that their products are generally overpriced so with that in mind I am open to suggestions.
|
It really depends on how much you are finding them for. I've heard the w3, w6, and w7. Personally, I wont buy the 10", it's either gonna be 12" or 13".

Check out that link. I think you might find it pertinent. I'm looking at a 10W6v3, the shop has them retail for $550. Ouch. About $300 more than I anticipated spending, but that sub would match the power output of the new amp we have perfectly. The Type R's are nice. You should be able to get a 10" for less than $200. Your only problem with the PDX5 is that it doesn't output enough on the sub channel for the Type R. 300W from the amp vs. 500WRMS on the woofer. If you wanted to spend that much on a decent sup, to get the most out of it you need to match the power with a decent amp. Not that the PDX5 is bad, just not enough for this sub. If you went with a less expensive Type S, you might be satisfied. Though, most of these guys will say otherwise. |
10w6 @ 550? I think you are getting ripped off big time. I didn't even bother negotiating and could find 13w6 @ $600. But regardless, I'd not pay 600 for a JL.

Guess it will all come down to which sub I can get for the best deal. Radio Active has the w3v3's on sale next weekend for 189. Also I don't think a 12" would fit in the enclosure I have planned. |
Think I am going to stick with the pdx-5 and the 10w3v3 seems to all match up fairly well.
Box build should be my hardest yet, can't wait to get started. |
To kinokin; the shop said they'd "do something for me" on the price of that 10W6. Exactly what that was, I have no idea. I didn't pursue it since I'm not looking to buy right at the moment. But yeah, I nearly choked when I heard that number.
I think that JL 10w3 would be really nice. I like the fact that JL states an 'optimum' amount of power for each woofer. The 300W from that Alpine amp will be a perfect fit. And yes, to get the most out of this setup be prepared to invest in a quality enclosure. Good luck. |
it's a perfect fit...189.00 for the JL is reasonable and they do sound very good properly installed. You'll have a nice set up.
