Hey guys,

I've seen online a bracket for my jeep that will convert the dash mount 4x6 spot to a 5 1/4" for mounting a speaker.

Are there any advantages to this? which one is better?

thanks

Oziyak,
I would go with what fits. (4X6)
You will maintain better sound quality with a speaker that is mounted properly than a good quality speaker mounted poorly. You should take a look at somehting called a 4X6 plate. These usually consist of a 4" and tweeter mounted on a plate that fits directly into a 4X6 hole.
Several manufactures make them. My brother has a set of Clarion's in his jeep running off a 50X2 amp and they sound great. I believe Pioneer also sells them.

^^ I agree, a good set of 4x6 plates sound great, I had 5x7 plates in my 87,89,and 93 5.0 mustangs and they did sound great. Again if you're into high end SQ, you may want to experiment with components, but for "normal" people that just want great tunes at affordable prices, plates are the way to go.

i find that with a 4" mid ( at a resonible pricee) you will jsut not get teh same sq from a 5 1/4" the extra cone area helps quite a bit for those lower notes.

Also, there are many more options in a 5 1/4 speaker compared to a 4x6.

Go with a 5.25 if you can fit it in!! You will get so much better sound.

Typical car stereos usually have the front speaks crossed over above 100hz, so the extra bass is not that big of a deal assuming that you are going to be using a subwoofer. Like I said, for a daily driver, no srewing around with adaptors etc..the plates are a good choice. If you are looking for something a little more upscale then look into the components. I still have to say that a good set of plates sound damn good and I have owned lots of different set ups in the last 20 years.

No matter how you slice it, the factory Yj/Tj locations are crappy. They are not enclosed, so you cannot really expect anything in the way of decent midbass. I have a 92 Yj, and I have some Orion 4x6 coaxials with a silk tweeter in them that sounded quite nice when I was running them, but you have to cross them over fairly high, or they crap out. Doing 6.5's in custom door pods is the way to go, if you want some decent sound up front, IMO......
