4x6 hell

Hey guys, I'm new.

I've got an '84 VW Scirocco and am finally (at least) into the planning/pre-purchase stage; and I've hit a snag.

The MKII VW Scirocco uses 4"x6" speakers in all four corners and as I'm sure some of you know, no one makes components that'll fit. So I'm left wondering if there are any avenues my newbie mind wouldn't know to know to explore.

I'd also really like to avoid chopping up the doors to fit bigger speakers, but as I'm aware Alpine and a few other companies make 5"x7" components. Those might fit with a little coaxing.

Anyway, any insight would be appreciated.

-Jeff

If I end up going with coax (I'd really like component) I'll be getting the Infinity 6412CF for both front and back. They're very nice sounding speakers that should compliment my TS-W1241C well.

Just get 4" components, and then get 4" to 4x6 brackets...

Many companies make 4x6 plate speakers that combine a 3.5 or 4" component midrange and separate tweeter.

Are the door mounts the same as a Rabbit/Golf where the speaker is attached to the plastic grille on the outside of the door panel? If so, I have found the Infinity coaxial 4x6 a good fit once the adaptor plate is removed. Most speakers need a fair bit of trimming to fit that pod.

If I remember correct, it is a European mount 4x6" speaker in that car and not the American mount 4x6". If this is the case, then no plate speaker will work without major modification. Your options would be a European mount 4x6" like the Eclipse SE8465E or a custom build for a 4" + separate tweeter or as mentioned, major work to the mount and the 4x6".

^ Agreed. The Infinity is a Euro frame as well and comes with a US adaptor.

After hearing the regular refrence coaxials I think I'll start looking for a set of Kappa plates.

Anyone use ebay often?
