Active Crossover advice: old school Pioneer vs alpine

HI everyone. I am designing a new system based on things I have tried in the past for the most part. I plan to run a 3 or 4 way system - but regardless of that I am wondering what your opinions are regarding my choice of crossover.

1) Pioneer CD-1000 "old school" Premier Crossover/parametric (I have used this in the past)
2) Alpine PXA-H700/800 or even the older 400 model
3) Pioneer DEH-80PRS (3 way active built in+eq etc)
4) Pioneer any other DSP unit with a 3-4 way crossover
5) A pair of Pioneer CD-635 in dash units (3 way each)

The things that really matter to me is the quality and flexibility (and ease of adjusting on the fly is a bonus - having the unit in dash is good but I would be ok with the CD-1000 if it was felt to be best here). Does anyone think that the quality of the CROSSOVER part of these components is different from one to the next? I have no interest in the DSP effects etc. I want either full control like the CD-1000 or selectable x-over points that are not too far apart (eg 40hz 60hz 65hz 70hz 80hz 90hz not 60hz 100hz 125hz)....or being able to dial it in. Has anyone had bad experiences with the crossovers in the Alpine/Pioneer DSP units?? Parametric EQ is nice too, but I am most concerned with crossover build specifically.

What would YOU buy? Even if it's not on my list....any other advice? My mind is still stuck in a 1992 mind-set....old-school as some call it....but willing to change! thanks
(PS I am not worried about a 4 way x-over, 3 is a minimum though)

I run an Alpine CDA-9833 myself and I'm looking at getting the new Pioneer DEH-80PRS. It has the new stuff I want, the auto EQ etc, plus it has the active x-over I need.

I used to have a PXA-H700 and just bought a 701. I too considered the CD-1000 as I believe it one of the best stand alone analogue crossovers ever made. I used to love the CD-635 and put many of them in cars. I considered a pair of these as well but not many around. Ultimately I went with the 701 to have electronic processing as well as EQ and T/A should I decide to use it.

Other great analogue crossover options are the Coustic XM-7, 6e and 5e and the Alpine DRE-A500 as well as their older 3672

Hey, thanks for the input! I forgot about the Alpine DRE A500. Yes those CD 635's are handy and work really well...like I mentioned I have used the CD 1000 - just wondering how you find the sound quality and overall flexibility or sensitivity of the CD-1000 vs the Alpine 701? I remember that I could fine tune with the CD-1000 and actually hear what I was doing (without spec analysis), it's maybe hard to explain, but I found the responsiveness of the CD-1000 to be excellent, whereas other units I had trouble "hearing" what I was doing even though the screen said I had changed the settings....that probably sounds crazy, but it was how it seemed to be! I guess what I am asking you is that when you dial in your settings on the 701 do you feel that they are accurate providing clean filtering at those xover points? Are you happy with it? I tend to be leaning to the CD-1000 or hold out for a pair of CD 635 I think....old habits die hard....if anyone reading this has one or 2 Pioneer CD 635 for sale please let me know. They come up on auction sites once in a while for about $30-50, I'd pay more than that, and extra if they are super nice condition - we can negotiate.

Hey, thanks for your reply, I can not seem to find the info on the low-pass for the high frequencies - one thread someone mentioned that it won't let you set frequencies lower than 3.1KHz for the highs - any idea on that?? I will try and find out, but pioneer's own site doesn't tell the specs on the 3 way! I use larger tweeters up high and a fair distance from a mid and like them to be dialed down to 1KHz or at least have the ability to do so....

Alpine 701's can be had so cheap nowadays I don't understand why anyone would even bother with entry level HU'S anymore.

I have never played with a CD-1000 but I've read much and it's a beauty. There is one that has been on ebay forever as it's a little over priced but all things are relative I guess..

I really enjoyed my H700 and regretted almost immediately selling it but I was light on cash at the time and had other crossovers to use including an old school double 3way JVC that was suprisingly fantastic and a PPI 645 that was ok but not as nice as the JVC (and the power supply died on it like so many PPI processors from that time). I did believe that changes made on the screen were reflected in the sound of the speakers.

I came very close to picking up a DRE-A500 and also a great combo of a 3672 and 3402 but I'm tight on space and wanted EQ so ultimately went with a 701. It all goes in soon and I expect it to be every bit as satisfying as the 700 was.
