I am getting an Alpine 7996 CD/DVD head unit...can I burn audio tracks onto a DVD and play them as audio on my system...I want to have the benefits of both the large capacity of a DVD and the sound quality of a full-size audio file (as opposed to an MP-3).

Unless they've changed the model since it was introduced in 2002, it does not play burned DVDs.

 

According to the owners manual, which you can download from Alpine's web site, you cannot play home-made DVD's.

Straight out of the owner's manual......

Discs that cannot be played: DVD-ROMs, DVD-R/DVD-RAMs, DVD-RWs, DVD + RWs, CD-ROMs (excluding MP3 files), photo CDs, etc.

Having said that, who knows? My old Nak deck was not supposed to play CD-RW, but it did.

One thing I did to get the results you're looking for was to hook up an iPod to the deck. One that had 40gigs of storage capacity. I uploaded CD's onto it using uncompressed AIFF. Because it was CD quality size, I could only fit about 45 CD titles onto it. It's like having a 45 disc CD changer in the car.

I had the iPod hooked up to an Alpine IVA-D901 and it was awesome. The iPod adapter charges the iPod and everything is controlled from the deck (even the remote) and the sound was the same quality as CD. The only thing that bothered me was the interface - it sucked. I think having an IVA-D310 would have been better because of it being touch screen capable.

One more question...if I went with the 310 and an ipod, can I hook my PXA-H700 up to the 310 or do I need to upgrade to the 701?

Sorry guys...went to the owner's manual and answered that for myself...you can use either the 700 or the 701 with the 310.
