^ That's right eh - just like steam locomotives - I hear they worked great

you make it sound like ported boxes are like reinventing the wheel, i am a huge fan of vented boxes, i use them as often as i can when the woofer suggests that is the best way to go, iam more of a sq guy so my box recommendations are based typically more sq oriented, there is a time an a place vented, just not all the time, the steam locomotive comparison isnt accurate, in that case they completly reinvented the way locomotives were designed, in this case the woofer stays the same, just the box is different, in the case of the locmotives, the entire vehicle was changed not just the engine, perhaps i shouldnt dismiss the type x in vented. the only issue i have is that its not like im trying to fix a alignment that works poorly by changing the box, the method i used works very well, incredibly well actaully, dukk you have to remember, i sell avi, perhaps some of the most ported box specific woofers around, and have sold them for a decade, i have alot of experience with vented boxes, designing, building and testing, and dont dislike ported, hell i have a woofer ported in the dash of the neon, hey, you coming to kamloops this weekend for westec's show?

Paul Niwranski 08-16-2004 04:42 PM

Sorry - mabe I should have compared bias ply to radial tires then

I am totally about SQ - and that is why I vent my subwoofer cabinets whenever possible.

Kamloops is THIS weekend. hrm.. I dunno..

whenever possible or whenever appropriate

Paul Niwranski 08-17-2004 01:07 PM

I will change equipment and design until it IS possible and thus appropriate ;)

I'm sorry - for me there is just no reason for anyone to have to live with a sealed box

i agree with ya duke on how the boxes very from what is on the page. however. after a lot of toying and building and vise versa. ya get a preaty good feel for what does and doesn't work. i do however agree with ya 100% on the whole ported makes for great sq. after all what do you see most of the best home theater subs using! talk to ya latter.

heres my questions how does the sound of a properly designed and built ported box differ from that of a sealed?

SUX 2BU 08-18-2004 10:16 PM

My experience has been simply more bass from the ported box. The profile for the last box I designed had 5 more dB at 40 Hz and around 3 at 30 Hz. No hump either. Just more 'area under the curve'.

I am a firm believer in ported as well. Right now however, I am running a 1.5 cubic foot sealed box for my soloX 12" - the first and only sealed box I have ever run (in my own car) in my 14 years as an installer/enthusiast. It was supposed to be temporary but I am really growing to like the sound and nominal SPL that is coming from it.

I will still be building a ported box for my sub though - most likely it will be louder and still sound good.

Back on Topic...tell us how the Type X performs ! I have a few at my shop but I have never used one yet.
