Alternator - 2001 Saturn SC1

So I knew there would be a day when my alternator would eventually die. Today is that day.

Three questions.

1) Rebuilt vs New. What are the life expectancies between the two?

2) I'm located in Whitby, Ontario. Where would people with experience recommend purchasing from?

3) What are my options with a 2001 SC1?

thanks for the help!

Odds are if u running enuff to kill the stock one ... replacing it with another stock is just the job creation program. Those are little to begin with like 90A.(1.9L?)

Try to find a few guys local to u n see if they can point u in the direction of an aftermarket one, or Mech shop that can build one.

Then again even if u change it 2 times and u get one from a wreckers for 30-50 bux might end up cheaper lol

well i've been doing a little calling around.

straight exchange ranges from $140-160

rebuild $85-160

Higher Output $220 130-140amp
$180 160amp
$200 120amp

so far i'm looking at the $180 160amp alt. like you said AyZe, another stock is just the job creation program lol.

does this sound like a good deal?

u want an alt that produces its power at idle.
just because its a 160amp alt does not mean it will produce it or if it can it does so cold at high rpm. u want one that can make its power at low rpm which is were ur vehicle is 90% of the time.
at idle my truck runs at about 500rpms my alt can produce 190+ at this rpm at highway speed of 120km im at 1800rpm and my alt can produce 270+ these numbers are hot.

good luck

well i called around and that seems to be as big as its getting on my little car.

the stock one apparently is only making around 40amps on idle, 90 in bursts.
so i geuss anything over this is better than nothing right?

i did what research i could today, but had to make a quick decision since i need my car!!

so i ordered the 160amp one.

thanks for the input!
