I started off with a Kicker CVR 10" (rated 500WRMS) powered by a clarion 400WRMS amp. Amp went up if smoke a few months after purchase, then about 4months later the Kicker went out in a glory of blue smoke too.

Now my amp is a Alpine MRP-M500, (which is the last amp my Kicker was being powered by before it died) is now pushing an Alpine 10" Type-R.

Today I took my box out and measured the Type-r (DVC 4Ohm) and one of the voice coils doesn't even have continuity. The other reads out as 4Ohms. Although it still pounds at times, it sounds hollow. (which is why I took my box out. thought I might have a leak or something)

I seem to have this great ability of killing subs(2)/amps(1), any one know whats going on? All the subs were in sealed boxes ~1ft^3, the Kicker/Alpine MRP-500 were in my sunfire. Now the Alpine MRP-500/Type-R are in my Sentra. Different cars, different boxes.
As for the gains, I usually set them to 'normal' or just above. I never have it loud enough for it to distort, or bottom out.

I guess the dead coil explains my recent hatred on how my bass was sounding. I wonder how long I've been running it with just one voice coil..

New topic: Whats a good sub that wont die? Alpine was doing so well too. Haven't had a problem with either my (old) deck or amp.

might just be the type of music sometimes. i think i have that curse too it sux. i blew my 2 audiopipe 10. 2 10 phoenix gold octace R. clarion 12. 2 massive audio 12. a DD SS1 amp. fried 1 deck. 1 10 type e.

the only that held nice so far for the longest is my CVR 10 lol but i think my amp will go one of these days. it has a hi pitch whisle until i give it a little knock then it stops.. sounds like a defective cap lol

mostly blew all my subs with rap music. low notes without bottoming out. just constant bass

i'm no expert but i would think perhaps your gain setting is too high...i have mine at min. with my deck(Eclipse 7200 mkII) and i only play it at a max of 75%(60/80) volume. i've tried putting the gains up higher but i hear distortion very quickly...so i keep it at min.

Haha, I think that is what's killing my equipment. 3 Hours of blaring metal seems to make my subs cry. My amps should be fine now; They have 4 fans circulating air around them.

What do you have in the ~500WRMS range? I'm thinking about getting another Type-R. Although it broke, it didn't fail catastrophically like the kicker did.

DD will make a great sub for you, Pioneer Premiere and Kenwood Excelon have some that are close to the 500w rms mark, I should have a MB Quart Premium series here as well. For all out abuse though both for handling and dishing it out, I would look to the DD.

3 hrs of Metal makes my sub love me...when the wife plays her pop stuff(Lady Garbage anyone?)....well my sub threatens to go on strike. 2NR's Protege Cerealkiller listen's to our kind of tunes if i remember correctly(CoB, AA, etc..) so make sure the old man(jk rob lol) consults with him. lmao
