I've got an Audison LRX 1.400, rated at 650 rms at 2 ohm, and a Hertz sub box, the EBX 202R, rated at 500 rms at 2 ohm. Is it a big deal to overpower by a bit?

 

You wont over power it all if you turn the gain down on the amp. IMO over powering a sub is better then running the amp at max power and possibly having distorted/clipping signals to the sub.

 

They're probably rated at 14.4 volts anyways, so i could see the voltage itself being the 30% right there. you'll be good.

You'll be fine. Between voltage drop and imp rise, your good. Nice stuff too by the way.

 

the power difference is moot... as there is no standard way of specifying loudspeaker power handling. You need to learn what an overpowered sub sounds like, such as bottoming out of the vc or over excursion of the cone.

 

Always good to overpower you sub and turn the gains down, less stress on your poor amp

 

Not a good idea to turn the gains on the amp down, better yet a good idea to try and match your HU output voltage with the input voltage of the amp. Practising self control and restraint is also good but should be left for another thread.

 

There's nothing wrong with having a little extra power on tap.

 

LOL the 6.5" components in my doors are rated at 100rms, they are getting well over 230rms. 2.3 TIMES the rated power. They have been pushed everyday at high volumes (always clean and undistorted)for almost a year now. The only time I had any problem was at an SPL show, forgot to turn them off first. They did not like playing a 65hz tone ( they are HP at 70hz) at full volume. After 18 seconds the magic smoke appeared. Fortunately you can't beat the Clarion warranty, 48 hours later the new set was installed. I guess the moral of the story is this, overpower your speakers all you want as long as you are carefull of what is being played through them. If you hear funny things TURN IT DOWN. LOL
