to anyone with a 12L7
#3
I had my single S12L7 in a sealed box to begin with and now it's in a pretty big vented box. Both times the sub was getting 1000+ watts and I think it sounded great in both applications. The only difference is with the sealed box there was much less output and a punchier bass. With the vented enclosure it's a boomier bass with higher output.

Muckaluck, how well does the L7 cope with 1000W? Mine is only getting about 600Wrms and isn't as loud as I hoped it would be.
I built the streetbass ported box from the kicker website and it sounds alot better than the original sealed box it came with, but I suppose its all down to personal opinion.

3 cube ported is what a pair really likes to see,4 inch X 20(aprox.)14-20 inches in length(season to taste, lol).600 wrms is fine , but clipping WILL kill them.try running at their max power or higher. i'm running 1200 rms to each, daily driven

But personally I'd go ported

I had 1 of my L7s in a 3.2 @ 30 ABC with 750 wrms once. Didn't sound good. Too boomy for my taste. Now in a 1.1 cubes sealed per driver with 500 wrms per driver. Much punchier. Although the acoustics of the T-Bird sucked. Looking for something else right now.
Anyways, to awnser your question, yeah, the L7 will sound good sealed. But then again, that's a matter of preference.

from my personal experience:
the 12L7 will be most efficient in the ported box...crazy loud!!
it will however, unlike jaydawg said sound like poop in a sealed box... set one up in a 2 cube sealed box and it will get loud and very low, while sounding quite good. 600wrms is enough for the sub for long term longevity. however, if you can feed it 1000watts, don't worry about it, it can take it!
btw, here's a shameless plug for the ones i'm selling (NEW!)

Yeah it handles the 1000 watts no problem. There's this huge issue about overpowering or underpowering subs. My opinion is I'd rather have to turn the volume down then turn the volume up. The S12 is a solid piece of equipment. It gets so loud in my car that its difficult to breathe and I get that classic tingling sensation in my nose. When it's pumping hard there is no audible distortion. Furthermore bought this sub used off a member of the site (Rudy). I would image the sub is 3 or 4 years old and it still absolutely pounds.
Feed your S12 more power and it will be happier.
