Anyone with 2004 Pontiac Montana?

Hi there,

I am trying to upgrade a factory deck to an after-market deck on a 2004 Pontiac Montana (no onstar and no bose system). Nothing fancy but getting mixed messages. Hoping that you guys can point me in the right direction.

The confusion is the chime retention module. Called GM - useless. Called GM dealers - not much help. Called audio shops - some know about it, some don't, some said need it, some said maybe not. Searched the web - most site have it listed.

As this is the family primary vehicle, safety is a factor. I am leaning to install it just to be safe. Has anyone upgrade a deck on a montana and share their experience? Is it required? If so, which make and model of the module as there are a few model out there? Is there a module that retained the chime thru the car speaker instead of the speaker on the module itself?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2000-Up GM Radio replacement interface with door chime feature

Scosche GM09SR. Can be had for $50+Shipping on Ebay.

As I understand it the cost is due to the fact that the aftermarket module has to mimic some of the tasks the factory radio used to perform to keep the cars computer happy, whether or not this is true I can't say with certainty, but it wasn't worth risking it to me.

Personally I popped the module open and disconnected the speaker as I don't like the chime feature but will still retain the rest of the modules functionality.
