comparing the 2 subs together is like comparing apples to oranges the 2 subs are miles apart from each other try comparing the w0 to the type e and the w3 to the type r im sure the results will be different

Image Dynamics, Pioneer, Kicker, ED, AVI, Fusion too....just not the green ones lol. Should probably add in a few pairs of tens in the mix.
There's lots of choices, but the thread started out asking for SQ and SPL.

I A/B'd a pair of type Rs in a 4ft box against a 10-W3 in a 1ft box. Same load, same amp, and while the Alpines did go lower, and clearer, the overall output of the JL was higher (I built both boxes as best I could).

The Alpine will sound very nice, at the cost of a few dBs compared to other choices. The question you need to answer is "can you afford the power it will take to get the Type R loud enough?"
It's always about the trade-off, but it's a loaded question until the system can be looked at as a whole....box size and type, amp requirements (along with the wiring cost), matching to the front stage etc..

What do you plan to spend in total? And what do you already have? What vehicle and how much room can you sacrifice for a box? And finally, put these in order of YOUR priorities: Loud, Low, Clear.

Oh, so many questions

as of right now i have nothing, this will be my first system. all i have is a nice kenwood deck with sub control.

the car ill be putting it into is a 95 toyota 4runner which is good cause the shape should produce some good sound.

i was looking for one 12" sub because although i have alot of room in the back i tend to hall around alot of bigger things such as toolboxes soo ill still need the back to be functional insted of turning it into one big box.

i want it to be loud if i need it to be but quality is a large factor whats the point in spending money on something that sounds like .

in terms of price range 700 not includeing tax now that is a rough estimate obviously im not going to stick ferm to that it could go either way most likely up rather then down.

lots of people say to build a box rather then buy one i havent desided what im going to to about that yet. i will need an amp a wireing kit and a sub for sure though.

i was looking at the alpine because it looks solid anytime iv herd it in the store it sounds great and it looks like it can take a beating if i pound that absolute out of it. i know kicker makes some good subs but i admit im less interested in them i like alpine alot and JL quite abit. i used to like rockford alot untill they changed to there new style. i have also looked at Coustic subs. a friend has one it wasnt very expensive and it sounds quite good, he has a hole threw the cone from a fishing rod and you cant here any difference.

what size of amp would you need to feed a 12" type R or a 12" W3 properly

Good answers dood!
They raise some more questions tho.....sorry, but for now:

Two 10's won't neccessarily take up more room than a 12, but considering your budget, I'd stick to a single 12.

Any plans yet for your front stage? It might make a difference as to what sub to choose, and it will certainly give us a better idea of your taste.

The Alpine needs LOTS of power to go loud....the JL a bit less, however the JL will not give as good a mid-bass, so if your front stage is weak, like with the factory 4" spots for mids (yuck) then something like the Kicker would do you better (they have a good strong upper bass output, or KICK sic)

If you can build a box yourself (lots of help available here as far as designs), then you can spend a bit more on product.

If you need to buy a box, expect to pay around $200 for something decent.
That's a big chunk of your $700, so better figure that in first.....if you have less than $500 for amp and sub....you'd best be looking for efficiency, or you'll have a real nice bass that won't get loud, and what good is that?

Have you ever built a box?, and do you realistically think you could?

The box is the most important part of your system, as far as bass, so if you scrimp here, it really doesn't matter what products you choose....none will work well.
Once you decide on a box, then choose the parts that will work the best in that box.....any other way, it's like having your heart set on a Holley 850 double pumper carbeurator, when you haven't decided on the engine yet.

With $700 to spend, 200 on a box, 300 on a sub and 200 on an amp, will still leave you short the wiring and install......better start over.

i am not limited to 700 once i start my job again this summer i will have alot of money and could bump the price up to 1000$ if its worth it.

i dont have much in terms of front stage just stocks all around i could see upgradeing those speakers sooner or later they can go loud and still sound ok just not with any bass.

yes i can build my own box that is NOO problem the only reason for buying a box is impatience once i have the subs i will wanna use them right away and not wanna wait. my dad has a full shop and we are more then capable to build a box.

and yes i have herd of people thinking they are going to save money and build there own box in doing so they build a crappy box that isnt right for the sub and it sounds like crap and performes even worse.

i wanted to build a longer narrower box that i could push up agains the seat in the back rather then haveing a square box that sits in the corner needs to be ported....

i will be doing the install myself in hopes of makeing abit harder to steal maybe mounting the amp under the seat so you would have to remove the seat to get it out and somehow attaching the box to the floor so it cant be lifted out easy

when ever iv talked to anyone about a wireing kit they have said around 70$ not includeing tax.

how much would a box be if i built it myself aprox.. i know it would prob be MDF but id need to paint the port and carpet the outside..... still prob less the 200.
