My client just installed a Pioneer AVH-P2300dvd in his new Dodge Caravan. Now the question is, he's looking at the JBL P963's and he's wondering if they will work. The alternative are some Alpine Type S's. He's looking for clarity not power as they will not be amplified.

the JBL P963's are 6X9's most caravans that is what they take.

6x9's usually produce alot of bass and mids why not by an adapter to convert 6x9 to round speakers

and install round speakers?

My votes on keeping the install simple and replacing whatever size fits the caravan in the Alpine type S'. If you're client finds them to have to much bass, that deck will have tuning/EQ settings that they could easily tweak to get the sound they are aiming for.

Reason i suggest the Type S over those JBL P963's is simply since your not amplifying them then there kind of an over kill especially since there like $200 speakers vs alpines 6x9 at around $120. The frequency response is a lower on the JBL's but its a matter of deciding if the slight difference is worth the extra dollar and if you're client wants to spend the extra amount for something i don't think will overly matter unless there die hard into there music, which I am assuming they are not that crazy since there not to concerned about amplifying. Which would give them so much better sound. But of course this is really only my opinion and simply gives you an idea of some questions you could maybe ask them to see what they think.

They should listen to each set. People tend to have their own opinions on what sounds good in a speaker.
