Save the sarcasm for someone who gives a fukk. I never agreed that direct sunlight would cause speaker failure. Reread my post and then think about what I said... Common sense, right? So why did you post as much as you did? Key words I used were ambient and combination. Of course that sub failure wasn't caused by direct sunlight, but it sounded as though you were ruling it out completely as a factor because direct sunlight alone doesn't cause a failure like that. I'm not trying to prove you wrong, just filling in some holes. Clearly the store associate is a little slow, otherwise we wouldn't even be having this convo LOL

I have had the following happen:

Subwoofer with plastic cone crack (more than once)
Subwoofer with unknown type of surround freeze up and not allow the sub to move until warmed up
Speakers with Silicone/latex compound surrounds freeze up and tear if not warmed up.

wether its cold or hot the key ingredient to broken subs wether it be surrounds. coils. even baskets... its condensation. unless the temp in the car from the sun is above what the coil and adhesives can handle it makes no difference between the operating temp combined with car temp. it can handle an overall temperature if its not crossed by the sun or operation it has no base. cut condensation is the key. when its cold condensation freezes and makes pretty welll anything brittle.. combine that with something that moves like a subwoofers its a recipe for disaster. i had a cerwinvega sub literally crumble in my hands last year. my trunk leaked i never noticed because it was winter.. i removed it from the box because i was changing boxes the basket fell apart and the cone cracked to . damn plastic baskets. im not familiar with the sub your girlfriend had. but if you have a sub with the tencils runing through the spider and not open behind the cone you can easily crack those if its cold and theres condensation. even if its to hot the adhesive could get weak and let them come loose from movement. there are so many reasons a sub can just stop working. but i would put my 4 type rs on it that it had absolutly nothing to do with the sun beating on her car.

Keep your fan on all the time to change over the air in the car. I never turn mine off unless the windows are down. I've never had condensation since. Oh and make sure it's not on recirculate.

How long does it take for a VC to heat up, and transfer heat to the surround? Is that all power dependant?

I once blew an output transistor with a little chunk of ice after opening my trunk lid, because aside from that I've never had any problem with an amplifier

Not very long if it's not frozen solid........I doubt the coil helps warm the surround, the heat would have to travel thru the cone and heat the air inside the box first.

Surrounds will warm up when the surrounding air temperature rises, the flexing they do while working helps them out as well....which is a part of why you take it easy on them when they're cold.....

HTH

couldnt have said it better myself. if there not frozen solid just play them lightly. movement = friction in turn is heat. rubber warms up when moved around. the voice coil wont do anything to help a frozen or cold surround. its usualy layered spiders and surrounds that are effected by extream cold.
