Hi all, I just found this forum and started browsing around a little. Seems very nice so far. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Anyways, here's the deal. I want to upgrade the sound in my car a little.

My current setup is very basic. 6½" Type S speakers up front, 6X9" crappy Sony Xplode speakers in back, and a Pionneer 4500 CD-Player Unit.

Now, here's what I'm considering. I want to get a 10" sub, and maybe a 4 channel amp. Plug my current Type S speakers on the amp via the front output, upgrade my 6X9" speakers to something better (perhaps another set of Type S) and bridge the rear output on the amp to plug the sub.

So far, there are a few that seem interesting from what I've heard, but, this is all in panels in stores, so, nothing very representative of real world sound.

Amps : Rockford P4004 or Alpine 345
Subs : Rockford Punch P2 or Alpine TypeR

And, like I said, I'm going to upgrade the rear speakers too because the sound is quite mediocre from my current ones.

I mainly listen to heavy metal, so, I need a very sharp and crisp bass response from the sub, so that's why I don't really want bigger than 10", and will most likely get a sealed enclosure for it.

So, do you guys have any opinions on my current plan ? Other suggestions as to what I could get ? Good shops to check out in my area ? (montreal, quebec). I'm hoping to get everything done for under 1000$ if possible.

 

go ported box ,then try the set-up with out the 6x9 befor you go out and get new one

so you will play the 6 1/2" and the sub

 

i take it you are shopping at a Future Shop in your area? The Rockford 4004 puts out very good power for the price and it looks good too (if that matters) If you are shopping at FS I would recommend the Infinity subs instead of the Rockfords though. The P2 subs are plastic cones with foam surrounds for durability is deffinately an issus with them. The Rockford P1/P2 line is deffinately all show. The infinity reference subs clearly use better materials that will last longer and it is a better sounding sub too. Rock on buddy. peace

 

I listened to the difference between a ported box and sealed, and the response is noticeable better with a sealed box.

THUNDERFOCUS, I checked out so far Best Buy, Centre Hi-Fi and Future Shop in the area, and will be hitting some specialty shops tomorrow. At Future Shop, I listened to MTX 10", Infinity 10" and Rockford 12" subs, and, the rockford still gave the most defined sound of the 3. (Only the MTX and Rockford P2 were in sealed boxes).

 

Browsing around on Ebay, I saw this Hifonic Zeus ZX8000 5 channel amp.

so, here's what I'm thinking (if getting such an amp is worth it), i would get 4 X 50W for my speakers, and 200W for a 4ohms sub, or 300W for a 2ohms. In which case, I'd probably ****** up a 10" Type R.

So, any opinions on this particular amp ?

You want a 10 for the wrong reasons...

forget the 6x9s... just get an amp and some decent subs.... perhaps better components and proper install....

 

i would have to agree with Haunz on that, i always try to stay away from a lot of rear fill, specially 6x9's, i find most people have overexpectations from 6x9's and tend to make their system's sound like crap. Also i work with alot of rockford, mtx and infinity and i would definatly take an mtx or infinity sub over a rockford anyday, and go with a ported box, you will find more bass with less power

 

Having listened to all three MTX, Infinity and Rockford subs, I found the rockford actualy had the best sound... Anyways, that aside, here's what one store recommended.

Premiere GM7150 Amp with a Boston G210 10" sub in a sealed box.
(I decided to leave the rest of my speakers plugged directly to the radio.)

 

Purchase whatever equipment sounds good to you. No one else. Your the person sitting in the car 90% of the time and its your money. All the companies you have mentioned have a good to excellent reputation. Your on the right track. I do agree that you dont want to much rear fill. You will start to lose imaging in the process.

PS sometimes once you purchase an amp and you have decided which one to go with, get it installed and most companies dont mind you taking a box and putting it in your trunk for a sound test drive. All subs and enclosures act differently in different vehicles. This might help you decide the sound your looking for. Just some food for thought.
