Thanks lad.
The one surprise in all that was the show winner listings.. That's something I can influence.
The test reports.. you all know the story behind that. You can't dump on a product that is in the magazine because of an advertising campaign. Not likely to get any more advertising from them... I wish it were otherwise, but there is little to nothing that can be done.
I can try and point out a few more 'flaws' of you like, but I have always wanted to call the PAS things Product Reviews, not Test Reports. Leaves me open in terms of flexibility.
I like the old-school stealth stuff as well. I too couldn't care less about screens and chrome rolling on dubs and whatever the heck you call it. Nature of the beast sometimes I guess.
Thanks for some solid answers guys.. you all rock!

I think we need to develop a certain code dave, to let us know what you REALLY think of it, so that I dont have to ask you everytime I see you..."what was product x REALLY like?"

Like most of you said, and Dave hit the nail on the head, they should be called Product Reviews, not test reports. And like what was said, a reporter doing "test reports" on product can't go dumping on a product because it'll p!$$ off the manufacturer/distributor of the product and they won't advertise in the mag. A bit of a "catch 22".
But, I think the one thing that irks me the most is the endless SEA OF ADVERTISING ! Man, a 200 page magazine and 150 pages are ads from every conceivable supplier, manufacturer, importer, distributor and warehouser in the country !! I understand that the publishers of the magazines have to offset income by selling ads in their mags, but for crying out loud, when 75% or MORE of the mag is advertising, and they can't fit a feature in on a competitor's vehicle or a demo vehicle, what's going on ?!?!?!?!?! They should add "AND ADVERTISING" to the end of the titles of the mags; and not just car audio mags, all of them in general. Sorry about my ranting, it's a pet peeve...
Anyway, as drspd said, I'm writing for Sport Compact National magazine now and my first article will be out in the next issue, SCN 4.02. The article is about a Canadian car audio competitor, Alexandre Dahan from Montreal. He was the 2003 World Champion in IASCA Rookie 601+ class at the Finals last October in Memphis. If you get the chance to read the article I would really like to hear what you think of it. Please let me know. You'll also see articles on the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas and on the International Installer Challenge that was held there that I wrote. I hope you enjoy reading them !

CA&E used to have the best format when they had two Installs features of higher end carsand then the Choices install that was a realistic Joe Blow consumer install. That was nice.
But then they 'had' to change from a format everyone loved to Captain Rodney's Bling Parade and their sales hit the toilet. Good job guys.
Dereck - I read the article. It was excellent.

I know you guys don't like all the ads. We (the editorial staff) even joke about it in the office, but it's a fact of life.
To make the magazine, you have to pay all the staff and pay for the printing. To recoup those costs, you need to sell advertising. We honestly try and run the ship as tightly as possible, but we need to pay the bills.
We have boldly undertaken the challenge of producing 8 issues this year rather than 6 like last year. Sadly, this hurts us even more. Each issue is smaller, but we have the same massive printing set-up overhead costs, and similar per-page internal content page costs. The cover and binding is quite expensive.
No advertising means no magazine, sadly, it's just that simple.
