bought a new amp, I feel I was mislead

ok, I don't know exactly what they've pulled on me but I think I've been screwed, I went in to by what is advertised as a 900 watt MTX X thunder amp, it says 900 watt max on the box, but when I opened it up on the sub it says 300 watt RMS and on the performance sheet it says power at 2 ohms 300 watts and tested at 351 watts.

did I basically just buy a 300 watt amp that's being cleverly disguised as a 900 watt amp?

no way of telling with out the exact amp model

There is nothing clever about it.
Amps come with 2 ratings, the one that means nothing, peak (or max) rating, and the real one, RMS.
So yes you baught a 300 watt RMS amp.

Keep in mind that my wifes hair dryer says "1500 watts" but doesn't sound good and doesn't move my subs at all.

Try the "high" setting and pointing the hair dryer directly behind the cone. The sub will move a "hair" :cheeky4:but the sound still won't get any better.:smokin:

If you are new to car audio, then you would not have known how to read the actual wattage of the amp that you ended up buying.

There has been alot of confusion going back years regarding the way the power amps (and HU output wattage were), thats why the industry came out with a standard called CEA2006, which list the actual true continuous power rating specs.

Yes the amp you purchased sounds to be a 300Watt Continuous RMS rated model, however keep in mind MTX usually under-rates their products, so what you have is a minimum of 300W, but probably puts out more in the range of 350+W

If anything, the place where you purchased your amp should have advised you of the actual power of the amp, unless you didn't ask or in this case just didn't know.

Best to start reading up on car audio specs, etc., considering you belong in this car audio forum.

You can't blame the amp for not meeting your 'un-informed expectations'. (No offence intended). Unfortunately many new car and home audio consumers are duped by misleading marketing tactics and sales reps.

I've had several RF amps and my 325.1 does a great job pushing 2 x 12" SVC subs.
