Hi,

I'm fairly new to this board. I am in the process of upgrading my amp and now have a decsion to make. I currently have a JL 300/4 driving my front Focal 165 Polyglas components on two channels and have the other two bridged for my JL sub. I just bought a JL 500/1 for the sub and find myself with two channels to use on the 300/4.

Question - would sound quality be better if I bi-amp the components with the amp or should I bridge the 4 channels down to two and drive the Focals with 150W each?

Btw, I have the Alpine 9853 HU and know I can use it for a 3 way crossover if i decide to Bi-amp.

Thanks,
Tim

*shrug* I'd try both, start with whatever's easier, and a week or two later, switch from there.

I'm sorta in the same boat, running two amps to one sub. I just got the second amp, so was running one amp at 1 ohm before, and now I'm running one amp to each coil, at 2 ohms each.

Sound quality is phenomenally better. They also draw a lot more power from my alternator, I can feel the added drag on the engine. I want to try bridging them so that they give me 2400w at 1 ohm, but I don't have the alternator power to do it yet.

I'm hopin' to get one before spring though

OH! This isn't really me! eehehe.... This is GrizZz on my wife's PC, so my signature won't be right until I get downstairs later...

I have a xenon 100.4 fronts to tweet's up in the mirror location 115wrms.... and rears to the mids in down in door 115wrms, with time correction and the great crossover on the 9835.... should be able to achieve the same effect with the 9853... it'll sound amazing.... I had it bi-amped before but wasn't gettin the control I needed..... at low volumes no difference but once I got rid of my crossover (which BTW has dual imputs for tweets and mids, how cool is that??), it was night and day difference.... BTW how do you like the glide touch.... one complaint has been with 4x4in only, it's hard to keep the finger there...... I like the 9855 but the 9835 just has that ora about it..... lol

I agree with Sass, go Bi-Amp.
Altho you get more power bridged, you decrease SQ substantially, and increase the chance of damaging your system.(never mind the car's electrical system)
Grizz, if your SQ is phoenomenaly better @ 2ohms than 1 ohm, can you imagine the difference @ 4 ohms?

Good point. But I think the drop from my current 1450w @ 2 down to ~800w @ 4 wouldn't be a good idea, I'd want more volume for sure...

But, I'll hafta try it!

So let's see @ 2 ohms you get 1450W, and @ 4 Ohms you get 800w. That's less than 3 dB diff, considering doubling of power equals a 3dB gain.
Try it, I think you'll love it.

Well, strip me naked, paint my **** purple, slap me with a three-day old kipper and call me “Betsy”...

So I bridged them today, at 4 ohms. Each amp is rated 425w @ 4, so that's about 850w. Not 1200. Not 1450... Not even 2400 - but only 850!

OMFG!

Why did I ever run at 1? Why did I ever run at 2? It sounds better than it ever has, and louder too. Perhaps this is just because music is reproduced better at 4, and straight tones at 2, or 1? I dunno, I just know it sounds wayyyy better than ever.

I can't help but wonder how this all effects my competition SPL... Sure wish I had one of those SPL meters for a week or two

And imagine 4 of these hooked up to one DVC 4 ohm H2 sub... ooooooooooooooo..... Two bridged to each coil @ 4... (drooling smilie here)
