Building an old school system....

I still remember drolling over the SX series of Orion amps when they first came out.....they were my dream system for years.....finally got one tho.......

Buying an old school system is frustrating. I dont know what to look for when buying an amp for highs and an amp for a sub..
Should I be looking at the frequency response specs of the amps ?
Is a lower FR better for a sub ?
Should I find an amp with a built in crossover or buy an electronic crossover ?
I also hear that some of the older amps have a thump when turned on.. ?

I assume you meant to type Fs for the sub.....the Fs is used to determine what kind of enclosure the sub will most likely perform better in......there may be some more obscure tech reasons I don't know about that someone here may be willing to share why a higher Fs is better, but I couldn't tell you.....
Back in the day a stand-alone Xover was the shiznit......they were generally more effective and accurately marked than the ones on the amps and if you had one in your system it just had to sound better.....
In the days of single preout decks it made multi-amp setups easier to wire up. Even before they put line-drivers into them to actually boost output voltages they would at least pass thru what ever voltage the deck would feed them to all of the outputs. Trying to feed 3 amps thru Y connecters would drop the voltage available to each amp to the point where gains had to be turned up too high, thereby adding noise to the system.
The thump comes from the output section of the amp.....in most modern amps there is a delay circuit built-in to keep the speakers muted until the amp has fully powered on and the rail voltages have stabilized. In some amps the turn-off thump is even worse.....

Well you just might be right....If I told you that all the companies who's equipment I used in my first system (1973 Ford Maverick sedan) were either bought out or went out of business before 1990 would I be dating myself?........

Yup....I didn't like the mechanics of 8tracks, the movement of the head drove me nuts.....the highs would be a mess until the tape finally settled on track.... I waited until Craig came out with an AM/FM with a cassette deck...........Mmmm Craig Powerplay....
Somewhere in my garage I still have an MEI Power Booster......20w a side.....oh boy oh boy....
