can hybrid cars have big db stereos?

like what would charge the battery? the engine would have to be on all the time? and that would defeat the use of a hybrid.. cuse I will probably buy a hybrid fusion next year or year after,,, and I want to put my DD3512 and my macrom in it...

Even in a hybrid all of the energy comes from gasoline (just like any gas guzzler). Unless it's plugged in of course but that's much more expensive than gas anyway. Whether your car is a hybrid or gasoline-only you must supply the energy consumed by the stereo in some manner.

That said, a hybrid will often have two batteries. One regular 12 volt battery for starting the engine and another high voltage bank for the electric drive motor. If you put a large load on the 12V battery then the gas engine would have to run a lot more. An inverter could be used to tap 12v power from the higher voltage bank but this would only give you more capacity until the gas engine had to start to charge the batteries. Bottom line is a hybrid does not use less energy, it only lets you choose the source (gasoline or coal fired plants )

Before I get attacked here I should mention that a hybrid uses a small high efficiency gasoline engine to charge the batteries and so gets more energy out of a liter of gas than regular cars. In this manner a hybrid can be called "green". It can run batteries-only when making short trips in the city which is urban polution friendly. Also you can mow down pedestrians easier.

Edit: If I owned a hybrid (which will never happen) I'd build custom amps that operated off the high voltage bank.

Until the costs of hybrids come down, you are literally paying the fuel savings up front. I forget who, but a Consumer Reports type group did a study on hybrids and found that with their closest comparison car, a standard Civic and a hybrid Civic, that, based on 85cent/litre gas, it would take 200,000km to break even due to the extra cost of the hybrid up front.

A diesel is a better choice. Yes they cost more up front too, but their residual value is also higher and they generally last for hundreds of thousands of kilometers where the estimated battery life on hybrids is around 7 years at b-i-g money to replace..

The 12 volt car systems and the high voltage systems used for the hybrid system are completely separate, alt generated power to the 12 volt like in a normal car. One thing you may notice is more electrical noise in your RCA's from the hybrid.
