For speakers I'd agree with Denonite and say that the S-Type Alpines, the GTO JBL's, and Infinity Reference Series speakers are great places to start for a solid sounding system. Audio is a very colourful niche, as so many people have different tastes, and the sky is the limit. I find the Alpines lack low end, the JBL's lack high end, and the Infitity's are well balanced but have too bright of a high end. But that's comparing to, not only the higher end of all those companies, but to other even higher end products that are out there, so what does it matter right? Take a listen to the models that Denonite mentioned and see what you think. It's your money, and your ears after all. Price points should be in the 100 dollar range for a pair, so it's fairly affordable. Also, like N130Gv2 mentioned, check the classified section, as there is usually some solid used equipment there that can outperform the things that have been listed so far

I have tried MANY different brands and honestly can say that Pioneer sounds the greatest with almost any speakers, even stock. Having said that, the imports tend to sound a little high stock, they need speakers added and look no further than JL

Ignore posts like this "Look no further than JL"?!? Because JL Audio is the best?! I could tell you that the McIntosh MX406 paired with Morel Elate 3 ways driven off of an Audison Thesis TH Quattro is the best sounding setup EVER, but is that 1.) true, or 2.) feasable? Jebus

apparently this guy has tried many brands...I guess no one else has any experience on here?? While JL makes good products, they are certainly not the only good brand available, and quite frankly, a little over priced for what you get. I'm not dissing JL as I like their equipment, but anytime some one gives advice like that...you run!
