Charging System on older cars

My gf's dad has a 68 Buick skylark that he wants me to put a cd player in. Everything he wants to be stock so i gotta build a small unit to mount the cd player in on the floor etc, but my concern is chargin system. Did the older cars have strong alt's or any alt at all? or a diff type of charging system? If so what kinda draw is ok on these older cars?

I have had friends install cd, amps, subs in their older cars (60-70s) and have upgraded the alt. They usually go to the junk yard, get an alternator out of a newer GM, FOrd, something with a v8 and drop it in, and it's been good so far.

those old style externally regulated gm alternators are 35 amps ...........that said I used to run a cd player, 2-50 watt/channel amps running a pair of 6x9's and a pair of 10" subs in my 68 impala ..........all worked fine [img]smile.gif[/img]

BTW when I had my 69 camaro I picked up an old style gm cased 100 amp chrome alternator with the 1 wire hookup (eliminates external regulator) for 150 dollars

check your local speed shop for one if you think you need it .........
