Cheap System and other Q's

so I'm wanting to build a fairly cheap system for a buddy of mine for his birthday. (surprise gift!)
i'll start with i don't mind buying used, online, or local.
Depending if i get some others to chip in I'll stick the budget at about $600.(but you know the drill cheaper the better)
I have an almost new DEH-P390MP so i was thinking I'll toss that in because i was wanting to upgrade to something better to go with my DD2512a & MB2.
what deck would be a good upgrade? one with 5volt out i believe? if you could name some models that i could look into.
I built my own slotted box and it sounds great so I'll be able to make one for him.

Ok so i guess what i'm looking for is... A deck suggestion for me (unless it's not worth it and i should just get him a cheaper deck) A 12"" sub & Amp to go with also some 6 1/2"s for his rears. (not as important as the rest)

thank you for all the help, this community is awesome!

If you are looking at 6.5" component speakers, you might want to check out the Phoenix Gold RSd65cs. They are cheap ($130 from onlinecarstereo.com [not sure any forum vendors sell PG]) and everyone seems to be raving about them.

You know your friend better than we do. Does your deck have features he will use? Does it have all the features he will be looking for? USB, Ipod, wma, mp3, aac file playback?

my deck, the 390. would be plenty good - all he really needs is AUX input. but i can always get something cheaper and i'll be happy with my deck. though it has week volt's out.

yeah thats a really nice set of 6.5" i'll look into into them more. and if there any PG dealers on here i'll talk to em. also i hear good things about PG's RSD 12" but i'm not sure which model. - so any suggestions on a sub, amp, deck??
