I'm looking to get one of these but it says it is directly controlled by other units. Does this mean that i will have to get these other units to control the processor or can i just get the processor by itself?

Yes you need something to control it.

If you dont have a clarion deck thats able to control it, then you need to purchase this guy: http://www.clarioncanada.com/en/prod...ia/DVC920.html

Would car audio ever get to be like home audio where it's just 1 source no external processors and what not to have 5.1 setup etc etc?

If you use the seperate controler (920 i showed) you can use any dvd player/fiber optic you want. The 920 has seperate volume control on the face plate.
