Components or Coaxials?

I was thinking about getting either a set of Type R SPR-17LS 6 1/2" comps or the 6.5 coaxials for my back dash of my car which already has some 6x9s in it. I was wondering what you guys think I should go with i can get the comps for around 160 bucks and the coaxials for 130.

I would go for the components. You will be happier in the long run. I just installed a set of the type r components myself, and I am impressed. Mind you, I used a set of cdt satnet 560 crossovers, which improved the clairity of the tweeters. The crossovers that come with the components sound good, but since I had these I opted to use them.

Components will usually be the best choice for better imaging, unless you can mount the coaxials perfectly, or swivel the tweeters.

component systems give you the flexibility to mount the tweeters where they will be most effective...that alone is worth the extra $30.00!! Not to mention the outboard cross overs, and usually better quality. That said, good co-axials can sound great and leave little to complain about, plus they're easier to install.

it seems to me that you are putting these speakers in the rear deck or parcel shelf?

if you are using them for rear fill, components seem like a waste to me, as you shouldnt really be getting your imaging from behind you.

do you have components up front? imo, that would be money better spent if you dont.

Thats the thing in the back it sounds great but up front it is a bit weaker. I dont have much options for mounting tho. All i have is my stock 4 x 6 space. Should i really be mounting those comps under my seat and then running the tweaters like between doors? I am running just stock 4 x 6s at the present. My buddy has some Type S that are less than 6 months old for $50. Will they pound pretty good and not distort or anything, I would be willing to spend 170 bucks or so on some good 4 x 6s. Any suggestions.

i dont know if you are willing to cut, but ill bet you probably have room for some 6.5s or 5.25" components up front.
or you could get an adaptor plate made up from mdf.

if you cant figure it out, it may be best to find a local installer, or someone who is familiar with your car and ask what fits. you may be surprised what you can squeeze in to some vehicles.

Well you see this is a big debate

some say go with coax because its a complete 360 degree but they don't make good quallity ones(will talk about more)

but people like comps because they can set the freq to what they want plus they handle more power the the coax

Put together a strong front stage before you even consider spending money on the rear. There's some great sounding 4X6's out there but they'll be lacking strong midbass so take a hard look at the location and do some measuring and see how big of a driver you can squeeze in there (and if you have to trim up some sheet metal it just may be worth it).

Once you know what you can fit in there go out and audition some speakers that fit.

When you've got the speakers you can then decide on what you're going to power them with. A high quality speaker shouldn't be run off deck power so start looking for amps and at the same time you may wish to consider a sub/s. You may just want a single amp capable of driving the whole system.

Ok now get to work.
