Do we really need subs tuned to 30hz??

a 20hz note can be heard just a few feet away. The problem is you only be hearing that note at a greatly reduced volume. You ca hear the note at full potantial(volume,dB's) at it's 1/4 wave and 3/4 wave distances(in an open space environtment without reflections)
The note is still there to be heard, but not at it's pressure peak where it would be it's loudest.

the movie U-571's depth charge scene used to make my house go ballistic when I was runing a pair of 15" Eclipse 87158's(black plastic cone series from 2002) in 7.4cubes each tuned to 18hz. Yet another thing marriage has caused me to sacrifice...playing that scene and going stand outside my house was a trip.. watching my second floor windows flexing out...ahh the memories.

to be fair...anyone can build a low bass rumble box that plays below 50 hz as well!! What's really impressive is building a box that sounds good playing all types of music using relatively low priced drivers and small amounts of power...that's harder to do!

Almost everyone on this board has a favorite movie scene or song that has that "super deep bass".
So many kids want to be loud and annoy the neighborhood. They flip the drivers over and build these 1 note wonders.
But the car that has a system to annihilate ALL the senses is rare and impressive. Because of physical limitations of small drivers and impossible size enclosures most people do not attempt it.
So, going back to the original question, "do we need subs tuned to 30hz?". If you want people to get out of your car and say "that sounds amazing!", my OPINION would be "of course you do"

I'm certainly no expert, but bass guitars tuned EADG go to 40 hz and for classic rock, were often tuned or recorded a half step lower to approx. 38 hz. Newer rock makes more use of 5 string basses that have a low B which is 30 hz I believe. So, for accurate reproduction, would your speakers not have to be capable of handling 30 hz?

but that wasn't the question posted, or the point i was trying to make.
