electical fire smell
I just got my new amp yesterday (JL 1000/1) and im running two 10" pioneer premier TS-W2501D2. They claim to take 800 RMS, 2500 peak.
i ran the subs for about 20 mins pretty loud, they sounded fine. Went to drive my buddy home last night and on the way home i started to smell electrical fire... turned it down as soon as i smelled it and thought "well i prolly just burnt the voice coils in my subs"
get home and google it and i guess i may have damaged them... im just kinda wondering why that amp with gain at half way would cook these subs? i know pioneer isnt great and at the price i paid for these subs i should have expected so much i guess ($110 each)
Also any suggestions on 2 nice 12's that i could run off this amp that wont burn up lol

Is that amp brand new? If it is that might just be a new burn-in smell. Other then that maybe the coils smell as well, and everything might just be ok. It could be that simple, if you rule those out, there are other issues to look at.

I noticed a burning electronics smell for quite a while with my IXL-15.2.2, but have never done any damage to it. Some just smell more than others when they get hot. Would i recommend slamming them even after they start smelling like that? Well, i did with mine, but Mach5 makes some good reliable stuff, so i wasnt too concerned. Pioneer i couldnt really say since i have only used an OLD Pioneer 12" back in the days, but i was only running about 200rms into it and never had any issues.
Does anyone have some subs you could borrow to see if maybe your amp is causing the smell? If the box is ported maybe just stick your nose in the port to see if the smell is coming from the box?
I have smelled a nasty burning smell from an old Pioneer GM-X802 back in the days and it lasted quite a while like that, but all of a sudden one day (while i had the volume WAY down and hadnt tortured it all day) it suddenly died. At the time i had no clue what caused it, but knowing a bit more about it now i know it was just a bad ground that i had made for it. hehe

i found when i burnt out my voice coils on my cvr8 that the sub got really really hot (obviously), so much so that i could feel the heat by just holding my hand near the cone. The smell was quite a bit stronger near the cone as well, further adding to my conclusion of burnt voice coils. The last sign before total destruction was a crunchy feel when I moved the cone by hand. Check for those symptoms, if they're non existent then you don't have a problem with the subs themselves.

You could have the gain set improperly. What deck do you have? There is no reason for you to have the gain at half way. The amp is likely clipping, this in turn WILL cause damage to your subs. Properly adjust your gains (read the manual), or turn it down to around 1/4.

Get into a mans sub and go with one of the DD3512 and build the proper slot port box for it and call it a day. It will leave your Pioneer subs or pretty much any pair of basic subs in the dust as far as output levels go.

Further to setting gains correctly on your particular amp is that you have to make sure you set the preamp signal to "high", if it is in "low" you are def clipping the amp with gains at half.

I forgot about that on JL slash series. I bet he's got it on low.... definitely clipping.
