Hey all.
Well i got 2 Mtx 6000's 4ohm, there 250rms 500max, subs. 2002 model. I got them hooked up to a JL 500/1 mono amp.. in a dual top ported box... work and sound great! But local absound, and some people i talked to said my subs are gonna die quick, explode or sumthing becuase amps putting out too much power. Isnt it 500rms? so 250 a peice that sounds ideal... if it is putting out more power, are my subs really gonna be affected? I do crank the system quite often, if not always... lol
I really dont wanna switch subs, but if i have to, are Alpine Type R's better? kuz there 300rms/1000max each.
thanks

T,
a speaker's power handling can greately be affected (reduced or increased) by the enclosure it is in. if you have the box i think you do then you will be fine. those speakers and the JL should be making beatiful music for a long time to come... dont worry. make sure you have set the gain in the amp properly so you are not clipping it. aside from that, ignore any of those ridiculous comments unless they are backed up by some relevant information, such as your amp clipping or the speakers bottoming out or even a poorly constructed box being used... get it??

Marco to the rescue yet again! haha your awesome man, always appricaite your help. Yes the subs and the amp do sound pretty darn good.
However what is meant by clipping? And to make sure the installers never set the gains to high, how can I check, whats an ideal setting.
The box is professionally built, it had 4 ports on the top, slanted back slightly...
ALSO
These subs are 4ohm i believe.... how should they be wired? positves to posiives , neg to negs? thnx
would it make difference if it was 4 +4 ohm? or sumthin like that.

Wiring
From the amp: Attach two wires to the positive terminal on the amp. Run one wire to the positive of one sub, and run the other wire to the positive of the other sub.
Do the same with the negatives.
This wiring configuration is called "Parallel"
Yes, the MTX 6000s are 4ohm. When you wire speakers in parallel, you reciprocate the number and add them together. EG:
Two 4 ohm speakers
The reciprocal of 4 is 1/4 (6 is 1/6 etc. etc.)
1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4 = 1/2
Take the last number and reciprocate the number again so the 1/2 reciprocates to 2/1
This is the final load: 2 ohms.
So, if that amp is pushing 500WRMs into 2ohms, you are fine because each of those speakers would receive 250WRMS. Then you will have no problems unless as MR Marco said poor box design etc.
Hope this helps
