First car need a bumpin sub

Just got my first car a 2000 cavalier 2 door

I am on a budget and looking for a sub that will bump hard in my car.

My budget is around 150-200

I already have the sub box and i need the stereo, sub and amp.

Is this possible on this budget, If so what do you recomend?

danyman 02-25-2009 09:50 AM

200 no lol you will be looking at at least 100$ for the sub and the amp around 200 or so for a small ass amp or more depending on the size of the sub rms ratings. on top of that you will need a wireing kit that will bring you from 60$ for 8gauge to 150 or a bit less for 4gauge.

i would say 600$ would be more resonable

Denonite 02-25-2009 10:15 AM

For sale section...start hunting!

Slaughter 02-25-2009 10:25 AM

You can get a basic 10" + Box & 2ch Amp for $100-150. Used of course. It would give a bit of a punch, but if you are like me it won't satisfy you for very long.

TragicMagic 02-25-2009 10:43 AM

"Bumping" hard on $200 isn't going to happen. Unless you install the amp yourself, and buy everything used. Even then, its going to be difficult. You need to find a head-unit with a sub pre-out, at the minimum. You could probably find one new for $100.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.ca/POCEN/Products/Car+Audio+Video/Source/CD+Receivers/Pioneer/DEH-1100MP <<< Link to H.U. Walmart, Futureshop, Bestbuy all carry this entry level deck.

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10 085244&catid=&test_cookie=1 10" MTX sub for sale at Futureshop right now. For only $80 you can't really go wrong.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.ca/POCEN/Products/Car+Audio+Video/Amplifiers/GM+Series/GM-5400T <<< Link to Pioneer H.U. It'll do 380W x 1 @ 4 ohms, bridged. Which would be a good match for the subwoofer. Since its a two channel amp, if you ever decide to take your system to the "next level" you could use this amp to power your front speakers, then get a dedicated mono amp to run your sub.

What type of box do you have? Prefab most likely. Sealed or ported? The box you have probably isn't going to be the one you end up using. Consider selling it to make money to spend on a custom made box. A custom box will help you get more output out of a relatively weak setup. It'll make the most of your gear...

Then you need an amp install kit.
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10 087677&catid=

You're looking at $600 after taxes. If you get the head-unit, subwoofer, and install kit at Futureshop you might get a package deal - but don't expect to save much. I'm not sure who carries that Pioneer amp at the moment. You can try sending an email to East Hamilton Radio.

MR2NR may be able to piece together a comparable package as well.

Look for 420Guy, he'd probably help you install the amp for less than you'd pay anywhere else.

flateric 02-25-2009 11:46 AM

Thank you for all the responses and information so far.

I have managed to track down a Sony Xplod 12 inch sub for 59.99 Is that a good deal? should i get it? It would match my box, my box is a 12 inch hole ported

I will also be able to install everything myself, so take installation out of the equation

TragicMagic 02-25-2009 11:53 AM

Do you have the model number of that subwoofer? $60 new? We need more info to determine whether or not its worth getting. Its inexpensive for a reason. Probably has really poor power handling.

Having said that, it might be alright to buy some really cheap, less-than-entry-level gear now, just to get some bass. In that case, this Sony sub would work. Once you let us know what the model number is, we can match a small amp to it. The only thing I wouldn't cheap out on is the amp install kit. Get something decent that doesn't need to be upgraded when you change your amp. Once the wiring is done, then you can technically hook up any amplifier you'd like (within reason).

In the future, try to incorporate model numbers in all your posts when you're talking about equipment. It a lot easier for us to help you out that way.

SONY XSL120P5A 12" SUB

Sorry im kinda new to this stuff, but yeah thats the model number and i think it was overstocked so this tore bought it

TragicMagic 02-25-2009 12:09 PM

We were all "new to this stuff" at one point. Hell, I'm still a newb compared to 98.37% of the guys on this forum. That figure is correct, by the way. lol
It'll do. I mean its not a quality product by any stretch of the imagination.

http://www.xplodsony.com/files/manuals//XS-L120P5A_Owners_Manual.pdf <<< Link to owner's manual.

The mounting hole has to have a diameter of 11.125". What's the diameter of the hole of the box you have?

The Pioneer GM-5400T amp I suggested earlier would still work for this sub.

flateric 02-25-2009 12:29 PM

the box was used for another 12 inch sony so i am hoping it will be the same, but it's in my friends basement atm so i'm not sure. If it doesnt fit then i will be making my own in woodshop

Will that sub give me decent bass?

TragicMagic 02-25-2009 01:02 PM

I think it will give you decent bass. Depends on your personal tastes. Some people can't get enough bass, some people like it low and loud, some like it tight and punchy. The right box can give you a little bit of everything, and do it pretty well. I prefer sealed. I have a 10" Alpine TypeR on 600W, and it does the trick. Before that was a 10" Alpine TypeS in a band-pass... piece of garbage enclosure that was. Low and loud - I thought it was cool when I was young and foolish. lol

A box built to spec will definitely improve things for you.
Build two enclosures, if you can. One sealed, and one ported. Try them both out, and see which one you like best.

I can try and help you design boxes if you'd like. Though Jalat is much better than I am.

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10 085244&catid=&test_cookie=1 10" MTX sub for sale at Futureshop right now. For only $80 you can't really go wrong.

GET THIS SUB, I HAVE HAD 3 of em, and now have 2 in my car, they are great

flateric 02-25-2009 01:10 PM

Well i am young and folish so will the ported box give me a low and loud sound?

that MTX is way better then sony, if you were in Hamilton, i would demo how good they are for the price you pay for em, futureshop also has a deal right now that sub in a ported box for 100 i think, but a custom box would be way better

flateric 02-25-2009 01:16 PM

ah man i wish you were near barrie umm okay well i'll take that into consideration cause for only 20 bucks more if it makes that much of a differnce that would be sweet, would the same amp that was recomended work for this sub aswell?

what amps are you considering?

TragicMagic 02-25-2009 01:25 PM

Yeah, for $20 more I'd opt for the MTX at Futureshop. And yes, that Pioneer GM-5400T amp will work really well. You could probably find one for $200. Might take some looking around though. But its worth a shot.

A properly built and tuned ported enclosure can help to make a subwoofer sound lower and louder. It can also sound like if its not done right. There are a couple of guys who really know their stuff. If you can build one in woodshop class, then you're set.

Keep doing some research. I'm off to work right now, but I'll check your progress when I get home.

Good luck.

You should probably whip by Futureshop soon, that sale is over tomorrow.

MR2NR 02-25-2009 01:27 PM

Um, no, the MTX is bottom of the barrel and is in line with the bottom barrel Sony. As the OP has a 12" ported box, go with a 12" sub to simplify things. I have a deal on the last years model amp that was recommended earlier to you and I know I can find a cd player for you as well. Interested, add me to msn and we can talk.

MR2NR 02-25-2009 01:29 PM

Best bet to maximize your budget right now is to use what you have and be happy with it. Is it going to slam your head with bass, no. Is it going to give you what you are hoping for, yes. The amp I have I know I can hit $200 on, sold one yesterday for that actually and I have one left.

flateric 02-25-2009 01:30 PM

When i get home i will add you to msn, im at school right now and it ends in 10 minutes

MR2NR 02-25-2009 01:32 PM

I am headed to work soon and will sign on there, after that we are slated to get creamed with snow this afternoon (after wearing shorts yesterday....) so I will be out plowing...white gold...

denis 02-25-2009 01:41 PM

i still think that a 10" mtx with a nice 300 watts rms amp will be just perfict for you, plus cheaper caz you can get it local, but if your willing to pay for shipping im sure you can get a better deal

flateric 02-25-2009 01:53 PM

the sony is also local, like 5 minutes closer too

denis 02-25-2009 01:57 PM

NVM im confused, what amps are you considering?

Slaughter 02-25-2009 02:09 PM

You can pick up an Alpine MRP-M450 for $180 + Tax as well. Not a bad amp for the price.. I don't believe. :P

mikeIS 02-25-2009 02:28 PM

i say if you are on a budget, just go to futureshop and get one of those 399.99 installed packages. They are not too bad, i used to have it in my dad's Regal, a JVC MDG-510 head unit, 2 channel MTX road thunder amp(don't laugh) and a 12 inch MTX sub in a sealed box. It actually did pound for my liking, and that's all i needed. If that's out of your budget, then try finding used ones, they go for pretty cheap, i remember i sold that whole set for $150, head unit, amp and sub with box.

Denonite 02-25-2009 02:36 PM

craig's list, kijiji, buy and sell, and the f/s section on most car and car audio boards...guaranteed to find a hella deal...hell i've sold really good equipment for peanuts, just because I was changing set ups....$300.00 Alpine decks for 80.00, 200.00 subs for 50.00, 300.00 component sets for 100.00, a 400watt MTX amp for 80.00. Just look around man, there's always good stuff for cheap on here. In fact there's a guy selling a JBL 15" gti sub and box for 200.00, clarion deck for 100.00...the first post man...assuming good condition...hella deal! All you'd need is a decent used 400 watt amp and you gots tunes!!

flateric 02-25-2009 03:01 PM

Would a Virtual Reality Amp – VRA4.0 be able to power the sony sub i mentioned?

because i found a guy on this site with that amp for sale for nice and cheap and it would be nice to get at that price if it worked

Denonite 02-25-2009 03:06 PM

sure...don't know for how long though as that brand has some reliability issues.

Slaughter 02-25-2009 03:08 PM

Well.. the VR only puts out 400 Watts Peak Power vs. the Pioneer or Alpine that run around 400 Watts RMS.

flateric 02-25-2009 03:11 PM

What does that mean in terms of how it will sound

Denonite 02-25-2009 03:22 PM

rms is real power...peak is bull power!...Rms is the spec you want to look at! SQ is not a big issue with modern day amps...they all sound similar, though flea market, cheapo amps could have noise issues, and use very poor quality components. Try and get a brand name amp around 200-400 rms watts and you'll be fine.

Slaughter 02-25-2009 03:23 PM

The Pioneer & Alpine's will put out a lot more power which should push the driver a lot better resulting in a more powerful bass.

flateric 02-25-2009 03:25 PM

Clarion APX2180 Amplifier
So this amp is 400 rms for 1 sub and that would be fine? Cool then cause i just found a dude on here with that one aswell. Man this site has been a godsend

420guy 02-25-2009 03:27 PM

flateric PM me I can help you out. I am changing almost my whole system next week and could give you a real good deal on a Kenwood HU, 2x10" Kenwood subs with custom built sealed box, Rockford fosgate amp 382wrms, and most of the wiring as well.
Pics are here...
http://www.canadiancaraudio.com/onli...lots-pics.html
and for sale thread is here...
http://www.canadiancaraudio.com/onli...gear-sale.html
Ignore the part where it says it is no longer for sale I need some extra cash right now. I can do $325. for everything except the fused distro and one of the unfused ones are already spoken for. Let me know if you are interested, it is all hooked up right now to listen to. Slaughter, BigRedGuy, and Father Yuli have all heard this setup and can verify it sounds really good. The bass will actually rattle my Front licence plate.
Nick

I believe that amp is 300wrms @ 4ohm. But should do the trick.

I would definitely consider what 420Guy has to offer as it is a very nice system and a great price! I've heard it myself and was quite impressed. Great guy as well!
