Hey all,
I'm having some thoughts about putting a 10 or 12" free air subwoofer in my car. Does anyone know anyone who makes them, or where, perhaps, i can buy them? Do they work very well?
Also, if there's another suggestion that'd be cool as well, however, space is definately a consideration.
I was thinking something around 180 watts.

 

Mounting a sub free-air on your car isn't really gonna do much... I think you mean infinite baffle, and in which case you'd have to seal off the rear wave from the sub somehow. A lot of people use the trunk as an enclosure in this case, and seal the trunk off from the cabin of the car. You don't necessarily need a "free-air sub" per se, just an iron will to be extra careful with your gains and volume ****. [img]smile.gif[/img] The obvious advantage is no box, but reduced power handling. If you're stuck for space, I think the better thing to consider might be a decent 10" sub in a sealed box. Should give you some good output w/180 watts.

Now, in terms of space, do you have a rough estimate of about how much a 10" sealed box would take up?

 

oh and if you could, could you relate it to an object rather than in litres, heh, im kind of retarded with numbers.

 

Average 10" sub usually requires about .75ft^3 just as a number to throw out there, which is not much space at all. It depends mostly on the sub itself, so it's probably a good idea to check out the manufacturer's specifications before making anything concrete.

 

.75 cu ft would be aprox 2 14" metal lunch pails bolted togeather bottom to bottom. aporx.

You've got a lot of good options honestly. I'd say the best thing to look @ is what kind of dollars you are looking at spending.

While you do have options not a lot of them are easy to find.

As far as what is easy to find.

The eD Kv.2 10" and 12" both do IB incredibly well with low power around say 150-250 watts. So do the old "O-Series" Elementla Designs drivers.

I've also seen the Adire Koda 10" seems that it would work decent Infinite Baffle with moderate power although I have not really had much experience with it.

JL Audio made some drivers that work well for it as well that might be worth looking into the 'IB' line. even though i have ZERO idea on their pricing on those.
