hey guys, my deck was installed not even a week ago. worked fine for a couple of days then the car went to a friend's to get painted. they did a bit of work on the outside of my A-pillars. so i got the car back, listened to a cd for a bit then ejected it and put another cd in. the cd didnt go in all the way. it started to go in, went inside to where i could not reach it, and jsut stuck. so i was trying to eject it, no deals. so im mad, after a couple of minutes i hit a pothole while i was lookin down at the stereo, and the cd clicked down and started playing. so i was like sweet.. it fixed itself. not the case though. now the cd won't eject. the face flips down and all that when i hit eject but sometimes it comes partway out and sometimes it only clicks.

a guy told me that maybe it is because some dust might have got in there. would that possibly screw my deck? i bought an extended warranty for like 3 years but more tahn likely they'll tell me its something that's "not covered" and i'll have to probably pay almost as much as the deck is worth to get it working again. what do you guys think? maybe it was the dust? if so how can i fix it?
thanks... i feel so upset right now. i loved the deck while it was working for 3 whole days

i see.. i really hope it's nothing serious. and i really hope it's not something i have to pay the value of the deck for to get fixed.

its probably either dust and dirt on the rollers
that will make it slip or dirt in the gears
i have seen lots of equipment wrecked due to body shops
why can't they simply tape off the doors oor keep them closed while they work or have it in the shop

it's dust. My clients Kenwood 922 went in for service for the exact same reason. She had her Civic in the bodyshop for a bodykit and paintjob. There was a small film of dust on the laser and it wasn't recogizing the discs. She had to send it in and it was cleaned under warranty and now works perfectly fine.

Ya, Kenwood's just have lousy loading/unloading mechanisms. Once they get some dirt on them, they don't work so well anymore.

My own KDCX979 is the same way. It's roughly six months old now (and has about 30,000km's already), and the cd loader worked fine for the first few months. Now, if I want to eject OR load a cd, I have to pound the heck out of my dashboard... Push the eject button, and while it's whiring, "whack whack whack" on the dashboard above it. Then the cd pops out, load another, and "whack whack whack" again until it clicks into place. This really sucks if you're showing off your kickass HU to your buddies...

"Ya, it's got Dolby Prologic 5.1, SRS WOW, built in crossovers, time alignment, EQ's for each set of speakers, etc. etc. Excuse me while I beat the hell out of my dash to get the cd out..."

Ya, just yank it out of your dash and take it to your service dude. He can open it up, clean it out, tighten the flip (mine was a little floppy the day it got installed even), and give it back to you, probably for just an hour's labour. Cleaning is not warranty work, you're gonna hafta shell out the dough.

Geez I was actually gonna do that myself this week... But I've been building for the 3X this Sunday instead. Hmmmm maybe I'll yank it out this morning and send it over to Rod, if he can do it today or tomorrow...

i know exactly what u mean, because its exactly how i feel right now lol. yeah i hope its just something as easy as that to fix... should i tell them that i suspect dust may have gotten in? i dont want to screw my warranty. i have no problem paying to get it cleaned/aligned though.. just if they end up sending it away or whatever. so yea, should i just take it in and say "yo dude my cds wont eject" or be like "yo man my cd's wont eject, maybe there's dust in there".. probably shouldnt mention it eh?

No, IMHO:

If you bought it at a major retailer, don't go there to get it serviced. Like you said, they'd have to send it out and it'd be a big hassle and cost you more in the long run. Cleaning/service isn't a warranty issue, anymore than an oil change on a car is. It's just maintenance, and needs to be done periodically anyway. Me, since my ride is a high mileage delivery van, I need to clean my HU at least once a year. Also, you need'nt worry that dust in there will harm your warranty, it's made for automotive use, they KNOW it's gonna get some dirt in it.

However, since you bought an extended warranty from your major retailer, this may include the cost of cleaning your unit. Read your paperwork.

Failing that, find your "local dudes" that service them. Here in Calgary, it's Rod & Russ, the "Stereo Doctors" at ARA Auto Accessories.

Rod does a lot of work for me, and he works on pretty much anything electronic. I'd just hand it to him, say it needs a cleaning & service, it's having troubles popping out cd's. Assuming it's a good shop and not some scammer, he'll probably say "no prob, pick it up tomorrow" (or whenever, busy guys like these may say a few days). I called Rod this morning and asked if he could do my unit today, but he said no, to busy till next week.

righton.. yeah i bought it from a local shop (we have a population of around 30,000 people here) so i guess its' a fair-sized retailer.. (well we only have about 3 car audio retailers in the immediate area)

Krazy Krazy Audio Video / Krazy's Car Clinic is the name, they have locations in winnipeg, thunder bay, brandon, and sydney. i've bought stuff from them before and have had good experiences. i never had to have anything done on warranty. but yeah i'll take it to them and see if they can do it. i know with the warranty, i had to have it installed by them so if i take it out to take it to someone else and they find out it may void the warranty.

so yeah, if they say it has to be sent away then i'll probably ask them the details of the warranty. how much (ballpark) would you think to get it cleaned locally by a small electronics repair shop vs sending it away? inconvenience comes into play with sending it away, etc as well.

thanks for all the info!
