Head unit DVD

My wife's gone to Afghanistan, I have to drive her 2007 Santa fe to keep it in running condition (and it's a heck of a lot safer in winter conditions than my Caravan).

However, she still has the original radio in it and the @[email protected] that it pumps out is driving me insane. So I'd like to replace the head unit with something nice and while at it, have the bling-bling video stuff.

I was looking at the JVC KW-AVX810 at 600$ at Future Shop. Reviews look pretty good so far. Any comments ?

I'm comfortable with the 600$ price tag but could put a few more bucks for a better quality/cost ratio.

I'm also gonna write another post concerning the subs.

well to fix the "noise" you may want to upgrade the speakers or atleast the front stage because if not you will just have expensive noise...

I was in the mindset that starting with the head unit would be phase 1, subs phase 2, door speakers phase 3?

I would go with door speakers over a sub, also since it is your wife's car I would recommend clearing a sub with her. she might not appreciate the space the sub box takes up.

I'm paying for it, so she better like it. But yah, it takes space. However a closed 10 inch box is pretty decent. Lots of room left for the groceries and kids toys though.

$600 for a jvc....i would look elsewhere
an alpine d100/105 or w200 can go for about the same
and there is many pioneers for that range as well...good luck!

Well, I did changed the door speakers today for 4 X Infinity 6022i http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10092161&catid=1104 3&logon=&langid=EN
Ok, ok, I already hear you say this is the lowest of the entry level stuff, but in my area there are only two windshield shops that are busy as hell and don't keep anything in stock and Future Shop. That doesn't leave much choice. And from the reviews I read about the Infinity's, they were not so bad.

After a 5 min drive back to my place they do sound half decent. Not great, but so much better than OEM. Anyway, I'm driving to Ottawa tomorrow (7hr drive) so I should have a chance to try them somehow, although my daughter is going to be with me (7 year old) and for a reason I just can't comprehand, she doesn't like old, loud rock as much as I do. Go figure!

Anyway, first impression is not too bad, but definitly for voice music and in serious need of bass help. So I guess I'm not going to have a choice but to add on a sub.

Funny enough, the folks at Future Shop had the Clarion MAX385VD. They told me to avoid it at all cost.
Then they had the Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD 500$ and the JVC KW-AVX810 600$. They said that altough the Pioneer didn't have as much features, it's sound quality was much better.

See, back in the days when I knew a thing or two about car stereos, Pioneer was so-so, JVC was good, Alpine was very good and Clarion was the top. Of course there were the exotics Blaupunk, Nakamichi and a few more, but only doctors could afford those.

jvc is pretty entry level imo its in the same level as sony
those pioneer AVH arent top of the line like the AVIC series but offer pretty
good value and for $500 unless it doesnt offer the features you want
i would definitely get one
if there is a alpine retailer around also check out the D105 or W205

Ok, so I made it to Gatineau (Ottawa) after a 8 hour drive (bit of a snow storm going).
I had a good chance to try the Infinity 6022i in my wife's Santa Fe.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Somebody shoot me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They sound like asolute crap.

After 350$ (with brackets and install), I went from a 1/10 with originals to 2/10 with the Infinity's. It's like listening to classical through a tweeter.

I can play with the EQ to get to a non miserable point with the cd, but forget the radio. Nomatter what I try it still sounds like crap.

So even if I wanted to add a sub, I would still have to get a new head unit to generate the signal.

The Santa fe has the steering controls but I didn't get any luck finding who was making an adapter. Finding a head unti that was compatible with the steering controls would be a good selling point. If I'm out of luck, I'm out of luck. And the only way my wife would forgive me for messing up with her car would be to get her something really sexy.

I enjoyed my Garmin Nuvi360 once more on the way. I wasn't thinking of a navigation system at first but some bad guy on this newsgroup managed to get me thinking. Now, it took a lot of finesse and work to get my non-tecky wife to operate the GPS, so staying with the same controls as the Garmin would be another plus. That is if I was to go with a navigation unit.

from what I read here lately, Alpine and Eclipse seem to be at the top with Pioneer being a decent third for Price / value ratio.

So, should I go all out and still change the head unit or should I get new door speakers (I assume that if they were installed I cannot return them)?
