It's to bad the TC LMS's are so expensive now...
I made a boo-boo. I was referring to the Aura NS-18-992. The NS series has the motor for around 25mm in a linear fashion, whereas the SX line is a little more focused on motor strength (22mm). I couldn't honestly tell you how much the NS weighs, but I'd be willing to bet it weighs much less than the SX: the motor structure (where most mass on a sub comes from) is much lighter on the NS than on the SX.

LMS was still pretty expensive before, but it is a shame that it will be priced well beyond most people's means. You can still get your hands on the same method of linearizing BL in the Soundsplinter RL-s or Eclipse SW8200's, but neither comes in an 18" diaphragm.

edit: Ok, they're listed as MR on the Aura Sound website and NS on Solen. Same difference though; my apologies for the confusion.

I am also using the RE SX 18". I am amazed at its linearity, it goes (frequency sweep and term lab in the drivers seat at the headrest at ~ 1/3 power) from 80 Hz (xover point) to 20 Hz at 130 dB in my car and box (too small BTW) with a peak at 52 Hz +6. It has fairly good SQ to boot (a little slow dynamically).

Others have been doing walls with the SX with great SPL results in the 150s on the windshield. There are better subs at SPL and SQ but this does quite well

If I were to improve on this sub I would probably have to choose SQ or SPL and there are numerous suspects in those categories

Yea Ligeia I think we were looking at the same subs.. if you look at the specs on Aura's web page they have the NS18's weight at 43lbs and xmax (which I assume is xmag) at 19mm.... the single 4ohm coil would be a problem also... (but 4 15's might work out for me )

Anyway, I am with JohnVroom.. the SX line in general is great for daily poundage with a good mix of SPL and SQ... I just want to think about other options since I am running more power in my next install... and would really like subs with more linear xmax....

Of course I won't make any decisions untill I actually buy my next car and figure out what kind of air space and install options I have.... but so far the way I see it the RE MX would have some trade off's with the SX's... most of which are probably advantages as far as what I am looking for (ie power handeling & lower extention)... but Im not sure the expense to switch would be worth it... same deal with the Fi subs....

I heard the new TC 'Audio Pule' LMS MSRP is like $2G per sub... so that is out.... I probably couldn't afford a pair of XXX's either.... but a single 18 would be one option... (one would have the output of two other 18's anyway!) But so far I like the idea of two SSX's the best... thanks all who gave that suggestion !

But if anyone else has any suggestions by all means keep them comming...

On a side note...

Since RE went split coil and Adire closed their doors..... are there even any companies making subs that use XBL^2 anymore ???

Creative Sound Solutions
Exodus Audio
A few others that are covered by NDA's

XBL^2 is most beneficial when used in a mid or full range design, and there's a few companies employing it in that fashion.

The Ascendant Audio Havoc would be a lot of fun; I assure you. The SX is a fine sub, but the Havoc is quite a step above it in my opinion.

why is 4" vc key ?
why not 3" or a 6"

Got any info on the Ascendant Audio Havoc Ligeia ? (Their web site is down right now) I remember looking at the company when the first came out but not since they dropped XBL^2...

ZZZZZZZ.... all else equal a larger dia coil will have less inductance.... but what I'm really looking for is more power handeling which you are more likely to find with a larger dia coil..... not sure I've heard of any company who makes a sub with a 6" coil though.... (well except MTX with their jag hammer which is not a sub I would consider)

Yeah, the Ascendant Audio site hasn't been updated since the merger with Fi.

Could you expand on this for a moment? Perhaps we can discuss in a different thread? Inductance is primarily driven by the length of the wire used for the voice coil and any shorting done in/around the motor, whether that's with a full sleeve, copper cap, shorting ring inside the magnet, etc. Physically moving windings further apart from each other does slightly reduce inductance, but a coil with the same length of wire wound on a 3" and a 4" former should have close to the same inductance, with less Xmax and more BL (more coil in the gap). The surface area to mass ratio increases as well, creating improvements in thermal power handling. Still, power handling is dependent on many more factors than former diameter, in my opinion.

But yeah...the Havoc is a very good choice. If you are really looking for something that provides improved BL linearity, there is a company in a few months coming out with some very impressive XBL^2 drivers with over 30mm of linear stroke and a neo motor for less than $300 shipped. I can't discuss more than that right now, but it should be quite impressive.

LOL, way to leave me hanging

I checked out that site and yea the Havocs look pretty impressive and are now on my xmas list for santa... (the only problem I would have is that Ill be running a pair of 2ohm stable amps so a pair of subs with D2 coils isn't ideal for me)...

I was also checking out the soundsplinter RL-P 18s which look very nice too and come in D4s...

As far as coil dia and Le we should keep things simple and consider only the coils themselves (or at least the coils installed in two subs with the same motor design and a similar magnetic permeability through the pole) If we also assume the dia of the wire is small in comparison to the dia of the coil we can see using Wheeler's formula (along with a couple calculations to determine the relative number of windings and wind height for a given dia coil and length/dia of wire) that coil dia and inductance are inversley related; and doubling the dia of the coil with the same length of wire will halve the inductance... (in practice Ive found this to be more/less true)

also like you say for an underhung motor xmax should go up for the larger dia coil, the relative cooling abilities may improve slightly, as well as a few other benifical differences...

did I mention my Lanzar Opti 6.5" mids use a 4" coil... ?

Ok, I gather where you're going. To stay on topic, the Havoc's can be purchased in D1 coils. You would have to ask Aaron or Mark (the owners of SSA) to order that through Scott, but it shouldn't be a problem.
