Exclamation

Hey Guys,

My Equipment:
- Alpine CDA-9835HU
- Focal Utopia 165W 2-Way Components in Front
- PPI Ax400 to power Utopias
- RE-XXX 6.5" Midbasses for rear doors
- Orion HCCA 225G4 to power XXXs

The Problem:
Now, my problem is this . . . how should I connect the RE-XXXs to the Orion HCCA 225G4? It is a cheater amp, so it likes to see a low impedance. The mids are 1.75ohms, so if I connect in stereo, the amp will only produce about 65W RMS, but the XXXs want to see 150W RMS. Is there a way to wire up the RE-XXXs in mono so that I get a larger output from the Orion, more suitable to the XXXs? The RE-XXXs are going to be the bass line of my car, because I will not be having any subs this time around. See the specs on the Orion and XXX below.

Here are the specs on the RE-XXX 6.5" Mids:
RE: 1.75 Ohms
Fs: 47.4 Hz
Qms: 2.33
Qes: 0.59
Qts: 0.473
Mms: 15.04 g
Cms: 7.505E-04
Vas: 21.49 ltr
1- way Xmax: 13mm linear
Le: 0.14mH
Bl: 3.636 t/m
Power: 150wrms
Spl: 87.75 dB 1W/1m

Here are the specs on the Orion HCCA 225G4:
4.0ohm stereo ~ 25W RMS
2.0ohm stereo ~ 50W RMS
1.0ohm stereo ~ 100W RMS
0.5ohm stereo ~ 200W RMS
4.0ohm mono ~ 100W RMS
2.0ohm mono ~ 200W RMS
1.0ohm mono ~ 400W RMS

Please help ASAP.

Thanks!
Bryan

But subs are always hooked up in mono . . . can't I just treat the mids like subs? Can I tune the XXXs low so that they are like mini subs, and run them in mono?

If I go stereo, is the Orion going to be seriously underpowering the XXXs?

What options do I have?

Please excuse my stupidity, as I am new to components etc . . .

Thanks again,
Bryan

Or, is there a way to lower the overall impedance on the Orion amp by wiring in my factory VW rear tweeters in with the XXXs?

Any suggestions GREATLY appreciated! My car is in the shop right now, and I need to make my decision before they start working again tomorrow morning.

Thanks,
Bryan

I want the XXX mids to play lower frequencies. Obviously, the tweeter will not be playing these kind of frequencies.

My Alpine deck has three preouts, so I could run the Focals on the FRONT channel and use the Focal passive crossover, and run the rear tweeters on the REAR channel using the deck crossover to get high frequencies, and run the XXXs on the SUB channel using the deck crossover to get low frequencies. Does this make sense and woudl it work? Woudl it increase the power to the XXX mids?

Are there any other suggestions for me?

Thanks!

If you plan on running the XXX6.5's strictly for sub bass and plan on using the Focal mid to cover the midbass (which it should do fine for most people's taste) then you can bridge the Orion for mono and parallel the XXX's. This way they will see more than enough power.

FYI, I have not used the 225g4 but the first three generations of HCCA225's did not have power specs matching their ratings. They actually did quite a bit more power at higher impedences than rated and when the impedence was halved the power did not double as the specs would suggest. Most were good for 500-600rms at 1ohm mono/0.5 stereo.
I would try hooking up the XXX6.5's in stereo and see how well they perform.

Hey Man,

Thanks for the tips.

Yes, I do plan on using the mids strictly for sub bass. I am not putting subs back in my car because they keep on getting stolen The XXX 6.5"s are going to be the only "bass" that my car will provide.

If I leave the XXXs in stereo, I am only going to get 65W - 70W RMS at 1.75ohms, but if I wire the XXXs in mono I will get about 140W RMS at 0.875ohms. Since the XXXs want to see 150W RMS, wiring in mono would be giving them power closer to what they desire.

The shop is working on my car in about five hours. How difficult would it be for them to first hook up the speakers in stereo, and then switch them to mono? Is it a lot of extra labour? I don't know much about physical installation (which is why I am paying someone else to do it for me )

Thanks again,
Bryan

Also, how low could I tune the RE-XXX 6.5s based on their specs? Can they provide bass frequencies somewhat close to a small subwoofer?

Thanks,
Bryan
