How to take my system to the next level?
#1
The equipment:
Pioneer Primiere 720
Boston Acoustics Rally Components (6.5")
Boston Acoustics Pro 12" Sub
Factory Rear Fill
MTX 500D
Kenwood 518s
For starters, I know the Kenwood amp has to go, its a pretty old amp and I want something with a bit more power and clarity for the Rally's.
Right now the midbass drivers are in the door with the tweets in the kicks. It sounds pretty good, but the right midbass sounds a bit louder with some tracks, but im pretty sure its a soundstage problem and not a mechanical problem with the speaker. With that said, im not sure if there is room to make kickpanels for the midbass to get a better soundstage, its come a long way since my jeep. I currently drive an 87 Acura Legend coupe.
In the spring, I want to dampen the vehicle and get a new front stage amp. Once that is complete, what can I do to bring the system to the next level and really wow pepole with it.
Should I invest in a crossover or an external eq? The 720's crossovers are pretty simple and nothing fancy, as well as the eq on it.
Anyway, I need some suggestions as to what I can do. And anything to help that soundstage problem with the right being a touch louder on some tracks.
Thanks.
Ty

Sealing the doors won't get done till the spring because I don't have a garage. The speakers are located in the normal door position. I think the left door may have more of an air leak or something that is causing it to be not as pronounced compared to the right.

Maybe your legs are blocking the left side too much and with the right side being on a direct axis to you it sounds louder. Putting both components in kicks would likely help with sound staging and imaging.
As for the rest, do you want to wow in sq or spl.
What does it sound like it's lacking to you (besides the imaging problem)?

if your factory rear fill is in the rear deck remove those for sure. Maybe think about designing and building a new sub box? For more pronounced midbass either seal off the doors or build some kicks, im sure you have enough room.
What exactly do you want to wow people with?

Im planning on building a new box along with a new trunk layout.
As far as the 'wow' factor, just to have a great sounding system and out of the ordinary to most cars. My BA Pro puts out enough spl for me and im only concerned about sq right now. I wouldn't mind more control over the volume of the system. It seems there is only quiet and loud with my deck. I set the gains on the 720 so that the max I have it turned up is 55 of 65. The stereo really doesn't come alive until 45 or so. I think I just have to spend more time fine tuning the gains, but I really haven't done that since Im planning on redoing the trunk and switching the front stage amp.

I think you need to redo the gain settings. The way you have it worded it kinda sounds like you are setting the gains with the head unit's pre-out boost/cut although I am not 100% familiar with that deck. Do a search for "amplifier gain setting" and redo them.
The amps have enough crossovers and most cars don't need too much eq'ing so the deck adjustments should be fine for a moderate system.
I like that Boston in a ported enclosure and you are giving it the perfect amount of power.
I couldn't find that Kenwood amp on their website listing of older amps but some of their older stuff were decent performers. You might want to look for a used line driver for cheap to put on there. That might be all you need.
Then seal up your doors well to help sound and improve their efficiency too.
Lose the rear factory speakers also.

I dont understand your "Pre-out boost/cut". They're non clipping outputs (so they say), but that doesn't mean I should've set the gains with the volume at full.
I think you might be referring to the Boston Acoustics Rally series subs because the Pro's cannot go in ported boxes and as far as I know there is no room for argument on that one.

The Pro will work fine in a ported box also and the output gain would be worth it in my mind but if you're happy with the sealed don't change it.
Make sure any pre-out levels (if applicable) are set to "0" when setting your gains. Use the search function for gain setting.
