So... Ive been thinking about some new home theater/stereo gear...

Ive got subs/amp/crossovers/20band x2 EQ... subs are being upgraded from 2 13s to 2 higher power 15s or 4 12s with a peavy 1.3K in the summer... also got a pair of kenwood cabinates at the momement with 12"/6"/2" 3way speakers...

I figured I just go buy a 100x5 or 6 HT reciever and center/satilite speakers but Im not sure if it will be enough.... The main system will be setup at the odd party so it needs to be fairly kick ***.... Plus Iam usually heavy on the volume...

Im thinking about looking for a reciever I can use in 'party mode' (stereo output from 4 or 6 channels instead of 2) and running midbass seperate from midrange/highs in stereo mode or use a DVC midbass/midrange.... highs I dont know yet, but they will be big....

So either that with relays so I can switch channels and speaker networks around...

OR,

pick up a surround decoder only and use all offboard amplification... possibly powered 15"/6"/horn cabinates and a 4ch amp for the centers and satilites...
(seems easier but probably more expensive unless I went ghetto style)

Explaining this to some future shop guy and listening to his response was interesting... but apparently they dont sell recievers that operate in 'party mode' or the decoder/recievers with no amplification... (According to him one would cost me $1000+ )

If I cant find one for a decent price I suppose buying a cheap 20x5 surround reciever and using it as a line driver would work.... (heh, $95)

Opinions ???

Maybe I should just keep it simple and use the kenwoods with only 100wrms X 2 [img]graemlins/cry.gif[/img]

Buy a cheaper rec with pre-outs, then just buy as many amps as you can afford.
Receivers without amplification anre called processors and they are quite costy (different market than recievers).

Why are they so expensive? Iam sure a cheap 20x 5 reciever would do the same thing... [img]graemlins/freak.gif[/img]


I think Ive seen the odd one on ebay, and they werent too bad... like under $200 for something used or refurbed...

Edit: I havent found one reciever with preouts.... ! (only for the sub)

My reciever has pre outs. One for each channel. Just incase you want to add an Eq or other device. Before I had my pre amp for my stereo system, I used the reciever as the pre amp and a pair of Tubes for the amplification. It worked quite well.

Processors are more expensive because that is the market they are designed for. The mid-high end market. If you think about it - it should be chaeper to manufacture a processor (no amplification) than it would to manufacture a receiver.

If people will pay it people will charge it.

fozz... I have not seen one with RCA outputs for each channel AFTER its been processed...
What kind of reciever do you own ?

I suppose amping my mains from the EQ loop and using the reciever for the center/satillites might not be a bad way to go...

I guess Ill just see what comes up in the spring/summer.... I'll concentrate on getting the boxes for the subs finished and carpeted for now....

^^ All modern recievers with pre-outs will be after the processing. The idea is that you can use external amps to power your speakers rather than the internal amps.

What you could do is use the recievr to power 5 speakers then the pre-outs feed another pair of speakers for you 'party mode'

you can buy a good receiver with preouts for under $300 in most stores.

Ive seen ht receivers that put out stereo sound into 5ch, the fronts and rears are stereo and the center is just mono. I believe it was a Denon that my friend had that did that. 85watts rms into 5 channels, high current.

Virtually every reciever does that. Its called Multichannel stereo or 5.1 stereo (kind funny considering what the word stereo means!)

It taks a stereo signal and outputs the left signal into both the front leftr and rear left, right signal goes to both front right and rear right and the center gets a combo of the left/right.

Works great at partys, really fills the whole room with music. Which is good because the older you get the less people care about the music at partys. How boring.
