personally I would take the Icon...they passed take the worse abuse
I have ever thrown at a SQ woofer

Agreed on all counts. If you want loud and have no need for good quality sound, then BL and Nightshade will work, and still if you want decent sound from them, I am sure some eq'ing will fix that. If you want sub designed for music not noise, then the other two will yield excellent results with minimal processing. I have not heard the Icon, but did the IDMax on many occasions. I say take the IDMax if you have medium to high power level requirements, and looking at the specs and design of Icon it can take more punishment at higher volume levels while remaining more or less clear. An IDMax does not tolerate abuse very well, just like any other sub with similar specs and goals in mind, but a woofer of this design has excellent transient response, and should theoretically sound best musically of all four. IDMax is simply too efficient to take abuse well, which is a friend and a foe at the same time and it depends what your intentions are. IMO, if you even have to ask a vs question with SPL and SQ in the same thread, you do not want SQ, you want it loud, and there isn't much SQ there. And if you want a perception of real loud, you need higher levels of distortion, and SPL subs will give you that on top of what peaky sound and high freq tuning can offer. Clipping amps also give extra loudness, so that is why you see many young people running small amps with huge boxes with SPL subs in them, not knowing why they get so loud but they do and are pretty proud of themselves. Clipped response really hurts your ears, and that to most people is "LOUD".

As far as this thread is concerned BL at SPL is like an IDMax in SQ designed for better results on lower power levels, and Nightshade at SPL is like an Icon in SQ designed to take more punishment. All four subs are not comparable, really.

Okay. Then I would like to get peoples top 3 SQ subs, SPL subs and SQL subs.
there must be a general consensus here where people are voting one sub in each category the most thus making it the most popular choice.

If this was this easy, no one would be posting these vs threads, and there would have been a sticky somewhere. No such thing as the best, but perhaps most optimal for the application and goals in mind.

Everyone is going to have a general - this is better then this. Bottom line is you have to ask for demos and have it installed properly.

^^ yup. you aren't going to find definitive answers by asking whats better online. everyones opinion is different, and everyone percieves sound differently. as said above, the only way to decide whats best for you is to hear it yourself.
as far as what everyone tells you, including myself, take it with a grain of salt, it doesn't mean much.

I can tell that SQ subs are not for your system goals, cause you said you want something loud, and SQ subs are nowhere near loud.

To oblige your request here are some companies that offer SQ subs for those who like top of the chain gear. Morel, DLS, Dynaudio, and Hertz. All of them will set you back quite a bit.

SQL top of the food chain comes from SSA, Soundsplinter, Audiopulse, JL, and Exodus. Also not cheap.

I dont know much about SPL at all, but I always recommend Digital Designs, cause they are SPL subs and still sounded surprisingly well to me.

I believe SQL is also not loud enough for you, as they usually utilize some sort of design to cut down on distortion, and that cuts down on perceived loudness. SPL subs are meant to be loud and nasty to get mad db's, and if you measure loud by how bad your ears are ringing after, then SPL route is the way to go for you. If you thought Nightshade was not loud enough, and I am not sure which direction that set-up was taking, but if it was tuned to being loud, it should have been enough to cause permanent hearing damage.

the nightshade sounded sweet. the guys deck maxed out at 30 or 35 i believe im not sure and he could only make it go up to 22 without receiving distortion from the highs. I wouldve loved to hear it go higher to see how much louder it couldve gotten. The bass and all that sounded clear enough, i think the nightshade falls under the SQL category. correct me if im wrong.

There is no such thing as SQL. At a undetermined point (as we all hear different) in the human ability to hear, we can no longer distinguish good sound from just plain loud.So determine what camp you want to be in, SQ or SPL. Do you want loud and all the obnoxious noise that goes along with it or do you want to be able to sit back and listen to your music. If this is a daily driver and you want to listen to your music and not have permanent hearing damage, SPL is not the way to go.
