I'm an audio virgin basically.
I just got a 86 caprice classic for $1000, and I'm going to be driving it to university. Now, I am not the richest kid, and I have about $500 to drop on this system, I don't really want a woofer, I basically just want a nice dash player, because with the 86 it only comes with tape players. The front speakers, I want something like 4x6, and back 6x9. Also with the model, being an 86 I think id have trouble with installation, should I bring it into a shop to get it installed professionally?
I want feedback on everything please, what brand of speakers you would pick, what combo's etc. I WILL eventually add a sub and amp, once my finances get a little better.
Purchases will be online i think, through eBay most likely.

If you are thinking about install or not, talk to the vendors on the site. Most of them will give exceptional products and the service to back it. That said, If you are looking to have it put in, more money would likely be required as installs take time and $.

Verify your speaker sizes again, some of the older GM's could also be a 3.5" and 4x10". With your budget it is easy to get a respectable set of speakers and a cd player that will allow you to expand at a later date. The Pioneer Premiere DEHP390MP would be a great start for you.

I know the front is 4x6, The back has a lot more clearance, and I heard of people actually putting 6x9's fine in the back.
I think I need a 4" double-Din dash player, any suggestions? or should I go with a regular 2", because I don't think it'd look to well

I Had a Cutlass at one point. 3.5's in the front (on the dash) and 4x10's in the back. I actually swapped out the 4x10's and drilled some 6x9's in there. You can go out and buy an adaptor plate for that specific purpose. For the 3.5's the infinity's were too tall to fit, so I went with some pioneers (made for early GM's).
The 3-way 6x9's in the back gave me some nice bass and I put a High Pass filter on the 3.5's so that they would just focus on the highs and not blow.
If you're sure that you have some 4x6 in the front (You probably have 3.5s), then I have some new Alpine 5x7's that might fit. I also have some Infinity 6x9's (3-way) that will give you the nice bass and highs in the back. I'll give em both to you for $160. For pics check the Canadiancaraudio.com classifieds.
Then go to Futureshop when they have the free installation deal and get your deck installed, a basic pioneer unit (140 deck + install).
Up to 300
Additional costs: The Mounting Kit for an 86 Caprice ($15 @ Walmart)
Total Cost
315 + Taxes on 155 = $335 Grand total
If you want more, then the next upgrade I would suggest is a 4 channel amp. Look for an alpine or Infinity for a decent price. I have seen them sell for 100-200.
The double Din will not fit into that dash. It is a different size, something like 1.5 Din. Just get the kit and it will fill up the extra space.
