Are you saying that you need to have the dock and 3.5mm connected just for the audio?? That doesn't seem right because the x794/x994 bypass the ipod dac

That is how it seems, the cable has the iPod dock connector on one end and a USB Type A plug /3.5mm stereo miniplug /3.5mm video miniplug on the other end. I do have them all connected but just to be sure, when I have a moment in the next few days I will unplug the two 3.5mm connections and see if i still get sound from my ipod. My next test will be to transfer some of the same lossless songs that are on my ipod to a usb flash drive and connect that to the head unit where I can be sure I'm using the Kenwood 24bit DAC and see if I can hear a difference.
