Insurance
Just wondering if everyone lets their insurance co know when they added their system?
Anyone that has NOT let them know and had stuff stolen... any probs with them on claims? |
I let them know each time I add my stereo equipment, and when I add more I keep reciepts.
|
Only when it's more than 2g's, and then i have it appraised by the insurance company's car audio shop just to be safe, plus i take photos, and keep all receipts for equipment and i make a bill through one of my companies for labour time as i do my own installs. I know years ago...late 80's...i had my entire system stolen and it wasn't listed with them, but they still covered it...and that was 5500.00 back then. Now, i think they'll give you a lot more of a hassle if it's not listed, and they didn't increase your premium to reflect it.

Mine will cover up to $1,500 no problems.....after that you need to have a rider added to the policy detailing what you have, how much it cost, how much you paid for installation and they will charge you an extra premium for it.....for me the 40 odd $ a year are worth the peace of mind.......:smokin:
HTH Meloche told me that, if I had equipment worth more than $1500 they would not cover anything over $1500 unless I got extra coverage. they also told me that they would not insure any system with more than 2 power amplifiers, and would not shell out a penny if they found out that I competed with what I have. but the lady I spoke with was a bonafide bitch, so some of that could have been hate-inspired insurance BS. best to talk to your insurance company to make sure you have proper coverage. |
Interesting. I just called my ins. co (RBC Insurance) and w/o even giving any details on the system (other than asking for my phone #) they said I was covered even though I said it was at least $5000 - $6000. I need to check my policy later though to be sure.
|
yeah, I'd double check that if I were you...seems a little generous for an Insurance co.
|
I pay a premium with TD financial. $46/yr for $7k coverage. They've got all my system info including pics. They never asked about competing. They were very interested in my security though. :sly:

Checked again and got a diff answer. Figures. Have to fax them the receipts. I received a # of $150/yr.
What aholes... the 1st thing they asked (I pretty much told them off before about it) was to ask for the Drivers License #'s of others in the household. Pissed me off. I said show me in writing where I agreed to that, or in writing at all. And they couldn't. Pricks. |
And another thing... the one guy said... oh I am not sure we can warranty that HU b/c you can play DVD's while driving. Amazing. This is RBC Insurance.
|
A lot of HU's have the can't play DVD while driving sensor hooked up to the parking brake, mine did, I cut it off. Tell them it's hooked up to the parking brake, it's bs. $50/year isn't bad at all. What's the best security system?
|
Yeah, I'll start faxing my receipts ... that don't exist.
The insurance company doesn't know anything about an audio system, so I'm not covered. But seeing how many have mentioned up to $1500, this is something I'm going to look into. |

I love prox sensors. My alarm digitally controls two of them with dual zones. Can't even get close without it knowing your there (four really loud and annoying bursts).... can't reach through an open window without it going off. Oh, another cool feature is relock. Should your vehicle be armed, and someone hits the power unlock, the alarm locks it back almost immediately. ;) I think that should make for a fairly efficient alarm. Then there is lo-jack... several other companies. If you do your homework. A tracking company's charge paid annually could be covered by the deduction by your insurance company. :smilie_da HTH |
You boys out east are very lucky!.Out here in BC your regular car insurance will cover the first 1k after that you have to pay $15.50/per $100 of declared value.Private insurers would cost $40/$100 of declared value.I am paying $900 for insurance plus $2k for a portion of my system's value. You guy's have got it made. B.C.= bring cash. Have a good week.

When I called the 800 # to revise my policy, I mentioned everything about the upgrades. faxed the receipts, and they approved everything. I received the docs in the mail to confirm. I then call them to double confirm everything and whether I had to sign this one page or not...
then they come back and say... your HU is not covered b/c it can play DVD's while driving. They did not care about anything being disabled or not, and the fact they already approved everything. They then said unless I removed the HU immediately, my insurance would be canceled. Pathetic. I am just going to tell them off, and go elsewhere. |
damnnn
my systems still somewhat small id be pissed right off if it was stolen but insurance company's cancelling you insurance over a video deck, id be like "it has blue-tooth for hands free calling!!!"
