The W7 in a the HO box is currently the best sub setup I've ever heard... if that means anything...

10W7 in a Golf with a 500/1.

Iam sure it sounds just like the same sub in a ported box with the same tuning and allignment...

What does an average JL shop charge for one vs. a custom box???

If you ever get a chance Defro,have a listen to the 10"version. Its a diferent sounding set up.For the average customer the box is too big.The W7's come with a design for a slot port box (doesnt compare to the h.o) and a desgn foe a sealed(eeww).The darn thing retails for arround a grand (ewwx2)

shon, i very rarely base opinions on gear having never used it, which is why i question people who feel qualified to give an opinion based on no expereince having heard it
