whats the trick to taking the face plate off these things? I had it for a couple years now, and I've only had it off twice, once I accidentally hit it with something and it popped off, and 2nd by forcing it, but I didn't like that, thought I was going to break it.

You don't take the face off, you take off the "removeable back panel", a chip attached to plastic, that clips on behind the control panel.
So, next time you shut it off, it'll move around a bit and then rest 1/2 folded out, so you can remove the backpanel.
Just grab the edges of the backpanel with your index fingers and pull, it'll come off, and the HU will continue closing itself.
This is all assuming you've had it off before, like you said, and not screwed it in permanent with the little screws that came with it.
