If that arrangement was in place, then that is wrong for FS to do and it should be reported to the manufacturer or distributor.
But to lose the deal over $20. C'mon man. As an independant shop you have to fight for every deal. Even the ones you might lose a few dollars on. Perhaps you will start a long, prifitable relationship with that client.
Walking the customer because of your own principals only hurts you twofold. You lose the deal and possible any future dealings with that client and you just gave the deal to your competitor. You didn't lose $20 you lost a $658 market share.
Take the deal and after the clients gone call the distributor or even better, be more aware of there pricing so you can notify the distributor before a client reaches your storefront. If they (the distributor or manufacturer) refuse to do anything about then you know where the loyalties lay and it's up to you to continue doing business with them or buckle down a be competitive price wise.
Unfortunatley some customers only look at the bottom dollar and when that client comes back to you for free advice you can rightly send them on back to FS.
Thats just my 2 cents. Take it as you will but I respect the independant shops alot, I never try and sell against them and I encourage them to adapt and overcome the price whoring that occurs in the battle to be competitive.

Rob has the idea. The 20 dollars does not matter. It is the principal here. My biggest **** off is liars and excuse makers. You think about it for a minute 20 dollars off of every deck that has gone throung here in the last month would mean $4,000.00 Just think about that!!

the point is that distributors can list "recommended" retails, but they are absolutely not enforceable. To require a dealer to sell a product at a particular price is considered price fixing, and it is against the law. Yeah it sucks that FS is undercutting the MSRP by 20 bucks.. but if anyone thought this wasnt going to happen, or believe a distributor when they said FS wouldnt do it, then they are delusional.
Principles are one thing, but they dont pay your employees or rent. Turning down the deal over 20 bucks was insane.

still laughing at the people that thought the shop was going to be responsible with the pricing becuase automobility said so, they werent in the past with many other products so why would they be know. i would rather sell alpine at 30 points all day long than have to beat my head against a wall trying to sell an eclpise for 32 or 33, and just think its only been a month or so, imagine 6 or 12 months down the road when they start to get real aggressive with instore non advertised deals. they will do whatever it takes to take the customer down and the path of least resistance for inexperienced clerks is to drop the price. this story has been played out many times in the past and will be repeated in the future, so dont p!ss and moan about it, take the customer down, cus the shop will, whatever it takes

^ Probably for the better
As posted above - if a someone told you that FS was going to stay at suggested retail and you actually believed them then you are the one to blame.
I've been on both sides and in my experience it is a competing independent that will screw with your competitiveness, not a chain store.
You sell 200 decks a month? 6-7 a day as an independent? If I believed it I would be impressed.
